Cool idea for sure. Only thing I would be worried about is hitting a weak soil vain that would let your above pond leak into your smaller pond.
If your not worried about that I would get digging. After building my own pond the first thing I was thinking of was where can I build another forage pond. Crazy pond bug I have now too.
