Twice this year I have hooked a small bass and while fighting had a much larger bass try to take the smaller one away from me. The last time (for the year) that I was out I just started to play a 12 inch bass, getting it part way to the boat, and then the fight started. I played the bigger fish for maybe 5 seconds and as it neared the boat it just released. I would guess that it was never hooked, just gripping the smaller bass until the boat spooked it. The bigger fish looked to be in the three pound range. It doesn't happen much but twice this year.
