I have been surprised many times along the way by things that happened by chance, and I have been really glad these unexpected situations occurred. It lets me learn and experience even more stuff.
I think your original post above is a fair gauge of what most new pond owners feel. There is just so much to know and learn. Any book or guidelines that one may follow can never take into account all the variables that nature can throw at you. You can learn from them, but you have to apply what fits to your needs.
