There is no such thing as a safe zone in a pond unless you have a blocking net. And that doesn't always work. Out of balance ponds don't easily fix.
How many crappie are you seeing? They may be the biggest problem when it comes to lack of forage.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
