I always put bungee cords on my tractor chains, and I did that when I plowed snow with my old garden tractor too. It really helps keep them centered.

Years ago and old Norwegian showed me how to easily put chains on equipment like tractors, etc. Run a piece of rope or wire through the wheel and partially snug up the wire against the ends of the chain. Drive forward until the connected part of the chain is coming up off the ground, and the other end of the chain is now draped over the top of the tire. Connect it up as tight as you can. Do the same thing with the other side. Then take if for a short ride, and re-snug them.
