Hello my pond upstate NY is about 1/3 acre and has the shape of a figure 8.We are damming off half the pond to see the side that we believe will go down in water level. We dug through the shale in one section we believe is bad.NOT SUPPOSE TO DIG THROUGH SHALE.We didn't know it at the time. There is a SEASONAL SPRING that we found in the shale so the pond leaks out in the summer through the SEASONAL SPRING when the spring dries up.About a dozen Cattails have grown where we believe the seasonal spring is. IS THIS A GOOD WAY TO TELL WHERER THE SEASONAL SPRING IS??? We plan on digging(After draing the oneside of the pond) with an excavator a hole were the cattails are about 3 feet deep and putting in a cement cast STAND PIPE 10" diameter(surounded at the bottom with stone)that will be vertical (Maybe 8 feet in lenght total), just above where the water line is suppose to be than repacking the bottom of the pond and around the stand pipe with 1-2 foot of clay. This we believe will relieve the pressure from the seasonal spring that is below the pond and have somewhere to go,flow up the pipe and out into the pond in the spring time when water flow from the spring is at max.Pond depth will be about 4 feet at that point.
Any input from the Pond forum will be appreciated!!!we plan on trying this 7/14/2012..john
