Ventured out on likely the last ice of the year. While I was popping holes and my buddy was cleaning them up, I asked him to check the ice thickness which he stated was "around 3-4". Satisfied, I began setting up a few BG rods when I accidently dropped a waxie in the hole. I bent down to retrieve and thought I'd check the thickness for myself. My heart was in my throat when I measured no more than 1.75"! No where to go at that point, and it was clear first ice since our last thaw, so we stuck it out rather close to shore and sitting in our sleds. Suppose he knew there was no way I'd head out on the ice knowing how thin it was. Not smart, but glad we stayed as I stuck the two largest SMB to date. 16" and 15.25" Mamas - one on teardrop/waxie and the other on minnow rig meant for YP and HC.

Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after. ~ Henry David Thoreau
