I'm with David u, but would add a slight modification that I learned from Rockytopper.
Make the trash rack a 3 dimensional box that is about 18" tall. That way, when it begins to clog with logs and sticks, the water will begin to rise and float the crap with it. This will, in turn, allow unrestricted flow just beneath the water surface.
