I guess another question would be "Why did it become the prime directive of the human species to freeze extinctions at the year 1900, when there's at least some modestly verifiable evidence that some species were indeed becoming extinct on their own before that point"?
I think it is because humans see themselves as the cause of the extinction so they feel compelled to stop it... There certainly is plenty of proof of prior mass extinction, dinosaurs come to mind!
