I might add that one reason to keep the grass down on your banks is it can hide the damage muskrats can do to your banks. I know I'm going to get more religious about it as I had some major muskrat damage this year on one of my dikes and it resulted in a leak.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
