Pond about three years old turning red
our pond is turning red really nasty looking, is stocked with blue gill, red ear, small and large mouth bass. We have tried Barley and we have to bottom air kits in it can you tell us what may be wrong or what we need to do?

Your pond likely has one of the reddish species of algae probably a single cell planktonic type. Your pond algae is a perfect example why barley straw and aeration are not silver bullet fixes nor good control methods for many of the algae species.

Last summer my grandson and I took a trip to Washington DC in the corvette. He is a History buff and so we stopped along the way at different civil war battle grounds. I wish I could remember which battlefield we stopped at where they had a pond called Bloody Pond. This red colored pond was located in the hart of the battlefield. And from my interpretation, the pond has been bloody red going all the way back to the war. And because of this forum, when I saw the pond, I pretty much figured it was due to the algae ewest describes here. Might not have been, but that was my thinking at the time. And if anyone is interested, the Battlefield that most impressed me with all the monuments and etc was at Vicksburg Mississippi. If you ever get a chance to visit that place, do it, don't drive by, stop and see it.
Sorry JP, I am no expert when it come to killing off reddish colored algae but there are some experts here and I am pretty sure they may have a suggestion soon.
Do not judge me by the politicians in my City, State or Federal Government.
