While trapping my pond for GSF, I also caught these guys. What is the bigger one?

If you have RES in the pond then it resembles a young redear. Otherwise it is some sort of HBG.

I have RES in the pond, but I wasn't sure this was one because it didn't have the red dot. If it is a young RES, that means I've had a successful spawn since stocking which is a good thing.

Small sunfish under 2" can be a challenge to ID for even well experienced fish experts. Looking at the morphilogical features and coloration of the sunfish, I feel it is a hybrid sunfish. It almost certainly has green sunfish in it. Most likely GSFxBG, but it could be something else.

CJ is correct trying to identify that 2" sunfish even with it in your hand can sometimes be very difficult. Give it a year and 2"-3" of growth and get some more pictures of similar individuals 4"-5" long. Body features then will be easier to recognize.
