5 acre embankment pond under construction
I have very much enjoyed pics other folks have posted, so I decided to post a few of my current project on my farm in SW Mississippi.
Damn is about 9 feet high in these pics and going to 15. Compacting 6" lifts of good clay soil with vibratory roller compactor. Encountered a couple of sandy areas in body of pond that will be capped with 2' of clay, tied in to adjacent clay strata. Dug core trench average 6' deep after hitting a sand strata around 3', but hit clay at 4' deep and tied in core trench.
Was lucky enough that highway department was demolishing a road near my place, so got some good fish structure from that. Dark soil at toe of damn is silt/topsoil apparently from an old stock pond that was filled in. Its been removed and good clay underneath. Plan is to construct secondary core trench at toe of damn and cap entire face of damn with 2' of clay. Shaping banks to minimum 2:1 slope.
As you can tell, leaking is my primary concern at this point and we are doing everything within reason to mitigate that. I will be hoping for a nice wet tropical depression in a couple of weeks to let the filling begin. If anyone has any thoughts, input, questions, etc, please let me know.

Sounds like you're doing it right. Will it be a smooth bottom or will you leave some contours?
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Dave, I plan to contour with cake layer "steps" between structure piles as much as possible. We are close to being complete within the pond area and I will post some more recent pics. Hope to be placing structure in a couple days and spreading lime then too.

damn is a curse word, hopefully you are referring to your dam and are not cursing it while you build it

Might have been a freudian slip there....but I damn sure am not cursing my dam now because pond is about half full and holding like a jug. All the precautions, compacting lifts with roller, etc seem to be paying dividends. It hurt my pocketbook a bit, but I wouldn't do it any differently in hindsight.

Posting some pics from past few weeks. Since these were taken, I've bitten the bullet and reseeded all of the banks (which a 2.8" rain played havoc on), except dam which I previously seeded and placed erosion matting, and placed erosion matt around the entire 5 acre perimeter. Also places some lateral water bars to channel run off to mouth of pond where I laid concrete revetment and limestone rip rap.

In the photo gallery I don't think you can add photos to an existing thread.
