gill rakers?

Here is a couple more pics of LE caught tonight. Caught a couple more unknown hybrid. I got to thinking that the only reason I was catching them on a worm on the bottom was because that is how I was told to fish for res. I thought I would try something different tonight. I caught some grasshoppers and put them on a small trout hook and let them kick around on top of the water. The "res" came up and grabbed them off the top which I hear is uncharacteristic for res. Any how I took some photos of the "gill rakers" or at least that is what I hope you ment by Gill rakers. Then the last fish of the night looked to me to be a young bluegill the last photo? It also appears to me that these three hybrid do not look quite as fusiform in shape as yesterdays. They look a little more round and a lot like esshups photo of a GG

Just have my phone for now so pic viewing is limited. When I get home and can access a full size computer, I'll look at the pics and tell you what I think.

Those are HBG (could be GG). Those are BGish gill rakers (or cross - not GSF). Last fish may be a BG or high % at least.

Description: There are 13-16 moderately long primary gill rakers on the 1st arch of BG.

HBG -- Hybrid of green sunfish X bluegill: Notice intermediate appearance of gill rakers.

First two fish appear to be HBG. The gill raker photos all seem to be hybrids as well. The second to last sunfish is most likely a female LES and the last one sure seems to be a pure BG.

Thanks for the help guys.....Now What? What can I expect from the hbg as far as reproduction. I did not want any bg in the pond. I did not want the competition for the les and did not want the problems managing the bg population. And I may be mistaken but to me comparing the photos of the hbg some exhibit more of a gsf shape and some more of a bg shape. Would this transfer over to other traits as well...ie the ones that look like more % gsf will act and reproduce more like gsf... So I guess I have three possibilities...Either there were the hbg in the res I purchased, or I have had unwanted help from a neighbor stocking my pond or I made a mistake in the identification of the 2" OSS I bucket stocked earlier this spring. If it was the latter then I know there were 72 of them stocked - the three I have pitched out and used for the gill raker photos so there are still 69 left. None that I have caught have appeared to me to be pregnant but I would think that they should be close to being big enough to spawn. So should they stay or should they go?????

Generally, the HBG acronym is used for the BG crossed with GSF hybrid. However, most Lepomis species can hybridize with each other, some do it more frequently than others. On this forum, HBG generally refers to the most common BGxGSF cross. It is also the only cross that is commonly available and to be honest, I am not aware of any other crosses being available commercially.

I've seen on this forum a few other crosses, but they were all natural crosses. Bruce Condello posted a very large RBSxBG cross he caught. I have also seen GSFxRES and BGxPSS. I have come across several other crosses over the years. Some other extremely strange crosses can occur in hatchery conditions that wouldn't otherwise occur in the wild.

In private ponds, I think the GSFxRES cross has some promise. The others are more just of interest. The exact outcome of a most crosses isn't well known or studied. Heck, most people don't really know much about pure species of sunfish in ponds other than BG, RES and perhaps GSF and PSS. Sunfish like RBS, LES, OSS and others are not well known but I think some specis have merit in pond management depending on the owners goals.

The more I ponder this the more I think it may have been my error as far as the oss I transferred from the creek.. I have noticed all the hbg have orange spotting on the tail and I also know that there are plenty of bg and gsf in the creek where I got them from. I feel real confident with the le, bg, and gsf id but not so much the oss. I believe I may have mistakenly taken the young hbg as oss. The fact that I have fished the pond so much and have not caught an oss yet troubles me. I can understand not catching an res because they have a reputation for being very finicky. So do you have an opinion on wether I should cull them out or do you think they will be a managment problem down the road for me?
Oh yeah ya'all can say you told me so ....;)

HBG shouldn't be a major issue, my concern is the pure BG with your goals.
