Nice job. I like the free-standing aspect of it. Mine is a hanging style....which only works off the dock. I would say yours is a good bit more versatile.

I put 9 skinny crappie in it last night as testers. Both to see if they survive ok, and if any could escape. All were alive & present this morning. I plan on using it as a 'fillet or cull' cage. But I really enjoy reading about how other pondmeisters are growing out fish in holding cages. Might have to experiment.. :-)

That looks great! I have thought about the same thing. Mine would be to grow some BG to a size that I could release, and not automatically get eaten. I thought about floating mine down by the levee. No dock yet. Could easily feed them over there. Maybe using pool noodles to float, then a pulley system to bring it in...like my floating feeder is setup. Thanks for sharing, that kind of stuff pushes the rest of us to quit thinking about it and start building it. lol

DrLuke, nice job. I might throw a tilapia or two in the cage if it's going to be in the water long term. They'll eat algae off the netting, and keep it clean.

I've fought FA since I bought my place, and tilapia would seem to be a great way to manage FA, and then feed the apex predators when they die off in the fall. Unfortunately, the Iowa DNR says no go on tilapia. I've written and called to no effect. But that's as far as I've advanced the 'tilapia cause' in Iowa! Maybe some younger, motivated feller, who can stand the smell of BS, will wander into the capital some day and clear the way.

DrLuke, I had typed "If IA allows tilapia", and deleted it. I sure thought y'all could have them.

DrLuke, I had typed "If IA allows tilapia", and deleted it. I sure thought y'all could have them. The thing is, I can't follow their logic in not allowing tilapia in Iowa. While I DO acknowledge the risk of introducing non native species into the environment, and the list is long, from everything I've read about tilapia they won't be able to tolerate the winter up here. Even if it's 'really mild', northern BOW will freeze over at some point each winter, even for just a little while. Combine that with the fact that several of our neighbor states do allow tilapia, and you have me stumped. But that's been done before..

I have blues from Rex, and they will not survive the SW Arkansas winter. 45 degree water and they are gone...higher than that for other strains. "I can't follow their logic"...honestly, its the lack of logic they have. Closed minded and unwilling to learn anything different than is in their books. May need to send your state representatives a letter and some literature.
Its alot like DOT laws. I'm a truck mechanic, and looking at the different laws that neighboring states have on oversized/wide load permits is crazy. They could be streamlined SOOO easy. But then there goes that revenue of tickets and permits for an extra foot of length or the wrong color lights.
