1 acre pond in NE Tx, 2 bottom air diffusers installed this Spring. I have a lot of filamentous algae. The water has already cooled off substantially (we had freezing temps a few days ago). I understand this is a vulnerable time for turnover as surface temps fall and algae dies. When and how long and when should I be running my aerators now and during the winter? I've been running 24/7 for the past month after spraying algaecide.

This coming winter will be my second using diffusers here in E Texas, so I am not an expert. I was running mine in late Dec when it was recommended by others here it was time to shut them down. I started them back up in March. ck your water temps, mine were running 63F yesterday. And I will shut mine down when water temps reach at or around 55F this year. Fish will slow down eating near those temps so that is my reasoning behind the 55 degree shut down and I don't want to super cool my water this year. Maybe others will join in here.

Here I run the air starting in September in the day only to try to keep the pond warmer longer. As the water finds that 55 degrees I turn on the shallow water stations and run them 24/7.

IF the diffusers are placed properly, and the system is designed properly for the pond, you should not experience any turnover. Turnover happens when the warmer upper water cools down below the lower water temp and they trade places. With a bottom diffuser system in your pond the whole pond should be the same temp or within a few degrees top to bottom.

Esshup, My water temps on surface have hit mid 50's in my 2 acre pond here in deep east Texas. My maximum depth is only around 9 foot now.I have a Kasco system with 3 bottom diffusers all placed in the deeper water and have been and still are running 24/7.This is my first winter with aeriation. Fish still feeding good and visibility about 20 inch on sechi dish. Should I just turn off the aeriation all together now for the winter until spring?? What if we have warm fronts come in like last year? Do I turn it back on for a few days or just let it be till spring? Most of this pond is 3-6 ft deep.CNBG by the thousands and I have 50 Florida LMB averaging about 2 pounds each. Just don't want to make any mistakes in my first year of aeriation. Any asvise from anyone would be appreciated.

FWIW I run my aerator during the winter only when we have heavy snow cover on the ice or thick opaque ice. I fired it up today as there was 4 inches of snow cover on the ice with another possible 12+ inches forecast by tomorrow. Snowing heavily now and I've got a nice big hole blown in the ice. I will shut it down again when the snow stops.
