Well, I guess I wound up agreeing with the "Gov" and doing nothing turned out not to be an option. I received my permit for my grass carp for the Lazy W pond yesterday and will be getting them in the next week or so. I suspect GC don't eat that much during colder months, would I be better off waiting until spring? The Lazy W pond, being so clear, is covered with about 70 percent vegetation, so would like to get that down some.

Buy the fish now, make sure they are at least 12 inches long and they will help you. You are in an area, believe it or not, where cormorants don't frequent. So, you have little to worry about as far as predation of your grass carp. There is still at least six, maybe eight weeks the fish can eat and grow. Get them now and you won't see much difference in plant growth by winter, but you set the stage for control next spring. 12" grass carp now will weigh four or five pounds by April next year. That's when they can do some good. And, you probably won't be able to buy that size fish next spring. Better to grow your own, anyway.

I have the same problems with extremely clear water and vegetation overrun. Were do I get grass carb in the DFW or waco area? Is the permit from TPWD? If it is from the TPWD what dictates being granted a permit for GC or not being granted one?

Rocky, I get mine from Arm's bait and fish in Proctor. I have a whole list of suppliers that you get from the state when you apply for a permit. You do have to have a permit no matter where you buy them.

Do you have to get the triploids from the places listed or can you get them from another farm? I can get them for 1/3 of the price here in Arkansas than what I have found in Texas.

Thanks Sunil.

I have been doing a rotenone sample the past two days with my Ichthology class. If the phrase "The smell could knock a buzzard off a gut wagon" could be used, this was a perfect time. And being within reaching distance of a cottonmouth and not knowing it is there is not fun either.

Thanks HeyBud. I have his number, I've been planning on paying him a visit. Do you know what dictates weather a GC permit is granted or not granted by the TPWD?

Sorry Rocky, I don't really know. I guess if they didn't like the way you replied to some of the questions on the application they would reject the application. There is also a formula for how many you can get per acre and how much vegetation is covering the pond. Also they require you to have some sort of containment system around your spillway if you are close to a public waterway.

I was afraid that might be the case. Sounds like GC aren't an option for me.

I added my grass carp and some RES today and it felt good to do something. One of the grass carp got hung up in some thick grass when I turned him out and I thought to myself, heck he can just eat his way out of there. Anyway, I feel like I have accomplished something today and it feels pretty darn good.

RT, getting an OK for GC isn't a big deal. I recently hauled and stocked some for a guy. You might have to erect a fish barrier to make sure they don't escape though the overflow. There are illustrations on the TPWD website. Some recommend 15 per acre but I usually use about half that many with good results.

You may have to wait for Spring to get them but Harrel Arms can probably get them now. I had to look around for them but finally found some. Everybody gets them from Arkansas hatcheries.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
