FWIW to my pond flyfishing friends, and other interested PB forum friends, the following are excerpts from the current issue of SaltWater FlyFishing magazine.

This story about a little jig hook is the hook that I tie mist of my pond flies on, and you may recognize it as Theo’s fly naming contest winner that Ewest named Mrs. G’s $Gill... \:\)

Very cool, George! What fun. We're proud of you, and just like football team fans, we pondmeisters claim a small piece of your action! \:\)

It would be really cool to have something like the "spinster" that would be a legacy. I'm sure that decades from now people will still be using it to catch fish.

Great job, George.

I fear that as Pond Boss members become more and more famous, we may all need hide from the cameras!

What a terrible burden to carry. BRING IT ON! Oops.

Congratulations George.

Nice going George.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

It’s quite an honor to be recognized by your peers, but not half as much fun as being accepted by a bunch of wild and crazy pond zanies that I call my friends...

The most famous super dooper blooper fly I ever “invented” is the “Pellet Fly” and I stole that idea from Cecil Baird and Greg Grimes... \:\/

After all I was Hugh Hefner in a previous life...

There has been a thread recently about the advantages of circle hooks.

There are two reasons I prefer a 60-degree bend jig hook to a circle hook, one personal and the other actual.

First my personal opinion - I like to feel the “bite” and set the hook with a jaw breaker strike. I don’t like a fish to catch itself.

Secondly, as Blanton states in the article, using my words:
“You never will gill hook as you would with a J-hook, which makes it ideal for catch and release fishing. Eighty percent or more of fish caught on a jig hook are hooked in the top or corner of the mouth. Also, a 60-degree jig hook will get you a much better hook set due to the lever action of the bend. As you continue to pressure a hooked fish, the angle created by the shape and pulling of the jig hook continues to stick into the fish’s mouth. In short I lose less fish on jig hooks, which is important when you fish barbless.

Another plus is that flies ride point up and requires less weight to do so than conventional J-hooks”

A minor problem that I encounter using 60-degree jig hooks on my pond flies is that the smallest currently available are #4 hooks.
