rodeo:

I have all sizes of CC from maybe 9" on up feeding at the same time. I spread the feed out to give lots of BG the opportunity to eat, which may also enable smaller CC.

Rodeo,

I lost all but one of my large catfish several months ago.

As far as I could tell, my big cats would spawn. I have caves in my shoreline banks. The females were full of eggs. But, I never saw any evidence of fry or fingerlings. As far as I can tell, that is pretty typical of catfish in small ponds. The catfish fry don't have a chance against the other fish in the pond.

I put in twenty-five 4-5 inch channel cats on June 1. They were supposed to stay behind a blocking net, but I failed. They were all swimming free in minutes. I was worried that the bass would have them all for snacks.

Lately, I've hooked several 8-9 inch cats that are very healthy and sassy. I assume these are the little guys from June 1.

But, when I feed, all I see are lots of bluegill and a couple of silly bass who act like the pellets are dragon flies six inches above the water. Now and then my big grass carp appear for a snack. Now and then, the remaining big catfish appears. But, so far, none of the little cats ever show up for pellets.

By spring, I hope to have several cages built. They will be for pellet training and fattening new fish.

Good fishn'
Ken

I certainly don't know the real answer, since I don't know how to determine when a fry becomes a fingerling. I'll leave that to the experts.

But, my 4-5 inchers grew into 8-9 inchers in two-and-a-half months this summer, in an open pond environment. Had I been able to keep them captive, and fed ever day, I strongly believe they would be at least 12 inchers by now. Maybe bigger.

In a pond environment, catfish fry rarely survive predation to become fingerlings. If they make it, it is rare that fingerlings ever ever make it to 8 + inches. They are just too slow. I'm not sure in a fish farm environment.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Kansas Wildlife & Parks reports CC YOY grow to 4"-5" fingerlings by Fall under aquaculture conditions here.

In my pond, I've never caught a home-boy CC smaller than 6". I guess if I catch a 6" CC in the middle of Summer, it must have hatched the year before. The growth rate you see in Florida would probably exceed Kansas if plenty of food was available.
