I went to my first H.S. football game in like 34 years last night, as my daughter plays saxophone in the band (They take 7th graders these days, provided they know which end of the instrument to blow in to. She does. ). I have a totally different perspective on it these days, having known many of the players since they were in preschool. Any time you come from behind to go ahead 21-20 with 1:13 left in the game (and hold on!), it's an exciting finish! I had a blast, although I can hardly talk today.

I agree - I had a cheerleader and a photo journalist/dance teamer who took part in the game activities. Like Theo I enjoyed it a lot but my wife never could understand if I went to watch them , or the game.

We really enjoy our Friday night HS football. We retired to this community 3 years ago and have met lots of people.
Texas football is serious. We have 800 students in our HS(Grades 9-12) that has a 16/1 student-teacher ratio, but have one head football coach and 7 assistants for the team.

I've heard football is big here in Nebraska, too.

Want to get to San Antonio this fall to watch Reagan High School football game - my 6ft, 203lb grandson made the varsity travel squad this year and hope he gets to play. He's an Eagle Scout and Philmont veteran and we are relly proud of him. Worry about serious injuries tho. They were runner-up state champs last year and have some real hosses on the team.

My son is a Senior this year he is also a Eagle Scout and a 2 time Philmont trekker, we went this year also. He is a pole vaulter and runs the 4x400. He is hoping to break the school record which if he gets to training he shouldnt have any trouble. I even picked up a full set of vaulting mats for him and I think my 9 yr old daughter may even give it a try so we should get alot of use out of them

Several years ago, I had a daughter in Band. We found that the band parents in the crowd outnumbered the player parents.

USC will be here in a couple of weeks. Maybe if we can get 'em, then that will clear the road a little for the Longhorns to make a run.
I've only missed five games in the last 37 seasons.

I thought Nebraska was a volleyball school. That being said, the Texans got a pretty good Packer reject to run the foo ball. Ahman Green.

I live in the land of Friday Night Lights. Midland-Odessa. Part of the movie was filmed here. The book was written by a former Odessa Permian coach. Odessa Permian's Stadium just installed a stadium TV for instant replay at the cost of close to a million bucks as well as a new turf for about the same cost. The stadium is supposed to be the largest high school stadium in the US of A.

Last night I had the pleasure, nay, the privilege and honor of sitting in front of a gentleman (For the first two quarters, with my right ear approximately 6 inches from his perpetually open mouth. I made a slight seating improvement at halftime.) who must be simply the most intelligent, most informed person to ever watch a football game in the history of the sport. Whatever the play, he knew it all, and what's more, he shared it unselfishly with the rest of us in the stands. Thanks to this helpful man, I now know: 1) Holding should not be called against your team if the player lets go after a little while, 2) That pass was complete since the receiver was only a little out of bounds, 3) It was an unbelievable (word used descriptively over 40 times) play, game, call, etc., and 4) The officiating crew must have done some serious on-line study of the rules during halftime, since they were completely wrong calling holding against our team on four straight plays in the 2nd quarter, but completely correct calling offsides three straight times against the opposing team in the 3rd. I am at quite a quandary as to whether this gentleman should have been serving as the play-by-play announcer, the head referee, or our head coach, since his 90 decibel position on each aspect of the game was invariably at odds with each of those individuals. Trying to figure it out had me chuckling most of the game. Possibly the only game-related job he would not qualify for would be photographer, since he didn't manage to figure out how to use his own camera during the course of four quarters and halftime. BTW, we won 34-10 and the band played wonderfully. Next week we play the semi-pro team owned by Victoria's Secret magnate Les Wexner. I can't wait to see their uniforms!

Just think what he would do at a college or pro game. Heck he could coach one and save them a lot of $.

Jahmin' mahn! - - To be respectful, I watched the entire show. My high level of etiquette was unexpectedly rewarded with the next Youtube video offering that immediately followed: Hundreds strip naked on glacier in global warming protest ...awkward, yet riveting.

Our season ended last night in a first round playoff game; this was only the second time our HS has ever made it to the state playoffs (and it's an old HS; my great aunt was in the class of '29). We made a good showing against the team that finished first in our league (we were third with a 7-3 regular season, 5-2 league record), a 42-21 loss in a game we actually led 7-0 and 14-12 in the first half. Our opponent was a school with an outstanding football program who had beaten us in the last 4 meetings by a combined score of 151-6, including 28-0 4 weeks ago (when they knocked 3 of our starters out of the game, one of whom was lost for the season). So the year ended respectably, with no 3 hour bus rides to playoff games on the far side of the state. Whew! P.S. The band finished the year 10-1!

I guess I'm weird. I'd rather watch a soccer game over a football game anyday. Maybe it's because my Mom's side of the family is European. Loved that World Cup recently!
