I'm running a 1/4 hp. gast rotary vane to two diffusers centered at an equadistance in my .62 acre pond. The boils are massive and they seem to be doing a good job.
Interestingly though when swimming in the pond from one end to the other I am amazed at the differences in surface temps that are easily disernable by your body.
Anyone else swim in their pond and notice this? I don't remember this last year but we swam later in the year. Maybe the water temps becomes more homogenis once air temps stay high enough for a while?
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I've always noticed that in my pond, but I don't aerate.

i'm not surprised. in my pond, before aeration, the body easily detected the thermocline.....surface to a few feet down was all one temp, below that, cold water. after aeration, yer swimming through convection cells. water is an amazing heat sink that takes alot of energy to homogenize.

How many days/weeks have you been aerating this pond?

My pond is fed by a good sized creek, and also from some run-off from a small spring (maybe 3 gpm).
For my pond, the changes in water temps are not when you change depths. It's almost as if you'll pass through ribbons of cold or warm water as you swim within the top 5' of water.
And no. It's not because someone has just pissed in the water.

Cecil, I don`t know if it is true in water, but my coon hunting friends in Mississippi call warm and cold areas in the woods "haints" (southern for haunts)! Maybe record perch ghosts?

As you know, my 2 acre pond is 20' deep, and though I haven't actually swam in it, temp readings from surface to bottom and one end to the other always seem constant within 2 months of areating. I would have to say that the fish spit in this particular pond has caused your body to react and have what is HIGHLY recognized by science as "reverse-hot-flashes" making you only THINK that the water is colder...

In April while using my Aqua-Vu camera and filming around the pond I was surprised at how much the temperature change even at a given depth. My model of Aqua-Vu displays depth and water temperature so you could see the changes as we paddle (kayak) around while attempting to film fish.
Some general observations:
Obviously, the water temperature varied with depth.
At a given depth range, say for instance 1 to 2 feet deep (at the time we were mostly filming at 1 to 3 feet) the water temperature varied up to about 5 degrees depending upon whether or not the water was in the shade of trees (and had been for most of the morning) or if the water was in full sun (and had been for several hours prior to filming.
Vegetation seemed to make some difference. If we were filming in the sunny end of the pond but moved to an area that had little vegetation the temperature would be lower than if we were film at the approximately same depth in an area that had lots of vegetation. Particularly if we were filming near a mat of Elodea (the bane of my existence).
I realize that none of this is earth shattering news and that I probably will not be nominated for a Nobel Prize but there it is.
Besides how often do you get a serious post from me.
Oh and by the way I haven't forgotten that I promised to post video of GSF. I am still editing (very time consuming). We did manage to get some good video of LMB and some of two large catfish in a den. Sunfish are fast as heck so I don't know how much video we have of them. LMB seemed not only not bothered by the camera they almost seemed curious.

Jeff,
But you don't use diffusion to mix your water column right?

Jeff, until proven wrong, lean towards the fish-spit therory and you'll do fine,,,
