I am going to set some structures in the water before I get fish in the pond . I have some stuff put together and am wondering how deep to set this stuff and if anyone has any ideas on how to improve on what I have, I would appreciate it. I plan on mainly having bg and lmb maybe a couple 3-4 cc. Was wonder on putting wire mesh on some ends of the pipe to reduce the size of fish to enter.

Maybe I should reconstruct my question :p
Will these pipes arranged they way they are be suitable for BG and Bass to hang around in, Say 3-4' of water or should I go deeper with them?

Trialsguy,

Your configuration is almost identical to what I've done with drain tile and fence posts, i.e. vertically stacked cylinders. I will absolutely assure you that the bluegill will use these at every opportunity, provided they aren't being already used by a bigger fish. Even then the larger BG will head butt a bass to make room. No kidding...I've seen it happen. \:\)

Mine are placed in such a manner that the deepest cylinders are just off the bottom in seven feet of water and it reaches to where it's just below the surface. The bluegill utilize all levels of the condominium.

I've also been having fun by sprinkling nightcrawler parts around the structure a couple times each week. It's now very easy to catch a bluegill immediately if you throw a jighead/crawler combination.

Personally, I wouldn't mesh over the ends to exclude larger fish (unless I were trying to prevent CC spawning). I think you've got a good mix of pipe sizes for different sizes of fish.

I agree -- great job. I would not put them on the bottom. Put a few big rocks like the one in the pic on bottom and then set the condos on them about 1 foot off bottom in and in about 4-5 ft of water. Wire them to the rock to keep it in one place and sturdy. You can also tie them to a pole and drive the pole into the bottom. See below.

Good stuff, trials. I hope you get rid of that nasty DW and WM. You have a nice secluded pond. I will make a bold prediction that in a few yrs. you will have a lot of competition for your fishing buddy's attention. She is adorable. I also predit that her suitors had better like frogs, fish and the great outdoors. Love those boots; we got the 2 oldest granddaughters(7 & 9) rubber boots for when they go to the pond. They wont even consider going down there without them.

Is anyone using old tires for cover? If so, what has been your experience with them? Better in deep water or shallow water, etc?

The first one is a great tire thread and it has some outside links which are good. The other 2 are also good. A search here shows there are at least 20 tire threads.

Ewest,

I should have thought about the search feature. Sorry I am new here (but now a lunker).

I will do more research next time before I ask a question.

Glad you mentioned my pond and WM and DW problem. It's right at 2 months by a couple days since I treated with Sonar, its looking great! I went ahead and had a second treatment of 6 oz. I think just to make sure,One week ago, I was seeing a few specks here and there of the WM and I didnt want to get it started again. This is a picture I took with my camera phone and it is low quality but I think you can still see what it has become, I love it! her is a before if you are interested Before

Oh My Gosh Burger! this girl will pick up anything out of the water, Not real thrilled about handling snakes but she is a hell of a crawdad and Daddy long legs wrangler, And a spider whisperer she will let the dang things crawl on her hands if she knows they wont hurt her, She has a spider book and logs the ones in she has handled or found, She loves to chase the boy scouts around when we are on a family camp out. She told me that she needs taller boots because the "MUCK" was coming in over the tops of the ones she has. Mom says we have ruined half dozen pairs of socks.

Oh and thanks for the info I think I will try and set a pipe in the water to anchor some of this stuff too.

Greg no apologies needed and no research required prior to asking questions or posting. If we did that very few questions would be asked or answered. The reason I put the number is that I was surprised there were that many on tires just in one section " Creating habitat " . Probably even more under the Questions section. \:\)

Hey what was the big mystery about wooden pallets in the last thread of the three that you posted ewest?

Don't know . That is news to me. A lot of good recommendations for them. Be sure they are not made of treated lumber. I have used them with no problems. Oak ones last a long time. Some of mine for 8yrs and still sound.

This is what Trials is referring to -- anyone know what this is about ?

Theo, he never did get back to me, so I have no idea what he was referring to about pallets.

From the actual words he chose, one would think there was some previous history on the topic of pallets.

If there's some negative to using wooden pallets, I wish someone would buck up with the reasoning because I use them most every year, and they are hyper-productive for me as far as concentrating fish.

The only negative with pallets I can think of are the nails/staples that go into the pond as part of them. That hasn't stopped me from using them; it's just a little more steel to go with all the lost fish hooks.
