Dave,

Until Eric provides more details, here is one of his posts from the link listed below.

Well the ice is out finally in upstate NY. My pond has been clear for about 1 week and I am seeing tons of activity with frogs, tadpoles ( many many many ) and lots of fatheads and rosy reds that made it through the winter. Seems there wasn’t any fish kill due to the creek running through a good deal of the winter even without any snow removal from the ice. Only I have not seen any of my Perch as of yet. Most of the pond is at 14 ft or more deep and the pond is now about 38 - 42 degrees surface temp. I am sort of surprised that I haven’t seen any of the perch out there yet. ( to remind folks, my pond is about 1/10 to 1/4 acre and 14-15 feet deep with a shelf around on 3 sides at 3 ft deep. ) I had added about 75 perch last summer in the 2-3 inch range. This summer the SMB go in. I will keep all informed as this progresses. I think I will see the perch start to show up as the pond gets warmer but I do hope they are just waiting to show up and not goners. Only time will tell.

If YP eggs are unfertilized they should have white centers after 24 hrs.

Thanks, Russ. So, this is all quite new. I am looking for someone who has had smallmouth bass and yellow perch together in a pond for a long time (for example, 10 years or something like that).

Sorry guys. I went up to Niagara falls to the casinos this weekend. Sort of fell behind in my posts here. I am thinking back that the perch are about in year3. The SMB year 2.

Russ, Is there anything I should be doing to prepare for the Scuds?( Do I need the patriot Missle system???) \:\)

Also thanks for providing the timeline for me. SOmetimes I lose track of time and what went in when!!

Eric,

Heading to the casinos in hopes of securing the purchase price of the scuds is one thought however, I was thinking more along the lines of scud habitat. I gleaned this;

Usually scuds inhabit weedy or heavily vegetated, shallow pond areas. BE sure you have some dense weedy areas for long term survival or you are for sure wasteing your money. Some species are basically stream or cold water species.

from a Bill Cody post in this link;

I would like to try scuds myself but question whether or not my BG pond has the proper habitat.

Thanks for that time update, Eric.

If anyone out there has been managing a pond with only smallmouth bass and a panfish, and doing so for a long time (at least 5 years; preferably 10), please let me know. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply Bill and Eric,
My YP strings are looking awful white now (I managed to get home for a weekend to check) I suspect they are not going to hatch. Appreciate the pond notes Eric, your pond sounds great. I have posted previously about trying to get the LMB out of my pond to stock YP and SMB. My neighbor has a smaller pond and his YP are doing excellent. I think I am going to do the unthinkable, (per forum responses) and drain it down Rotenone the 12 mature and ### fingerling LMB, and refill and stock this fall when the SMB are available. A drawdown will also give me time to work on structure. Had to look up info on the Scuds, sounds interesting, with my hard water, their outer shell may end up more like zebra mussels.

Eric,

Just curious how your pond is doing, water clarity wise. In a prior post you talked about the possibility of fertilizing. Have you done this and if so could you post your results.

Thanks

Russ, I still have fairly good water clarity( About 3 ft) I do however have a FA bloom and the water is becoming more murkey. Thus I am not looking at doing anything yet. I am now able to see the SMB around the edges of the pond. That is fun seeing them cruising around and working in packs. But minnows are going away quickly. \:\) I will add a few pics on another thread soon.
