I am not sure where they get their images, but they are approximately 10 years old for my area. Google's images are newer (for this area). What I found interesting, however, were the areas that did not have ponds at the time the photos were taken, but have ponds now. I am able to get a better idea of ages of some ponds around our place which will help us as we move forward in planning our project. Thanks!

The corporate boys all lag in free aerial imagery. Iowans are spoiled with the IGMS. I guess being the top agriculture state puts us one up on the competition.... If it, indeed is competitive world.

I was shocked by the focal clarity of the zoom on the Google planimeter. It was posted on another thread: link to G-P On our project, I can zoom in so tight that I can see the tree branches in the crown of the trees. I can see the few Sycamore trees that we have because the white bark sets them apart from the surrounding timber. I can even pick out the primitive foot trails. Way cool.

Can someone post a link to this "Live Search" by Microsoft?

Sunil, click on the link that Brettski posted. I can't get down very low. But I can recognize all of the landmarks on my land.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Google planimeter is post Katrina images even in rural Miss. I can see the giant oaks blown down. I can also see that the pond had hardly any water; if I'd have seen the images sooner I would have warned my fish.

Ken, I think the way you posted it was confusing some people. You are right, Microsofts, Live search is definatly the better of the bunch. Click on arial or hybrid. I will include the link incase anyone wants to try it. http://maps.live.com/

I would say there 7 or 8 years old. When i look at my property, the big metal bldg is not up yet and the pond is the smallest it ever was. The guy who owned the place before me made the pond bigger, and that was seven or 8 years ago but he only had the place here 9 years so the photos are about 7 or8 yrs old. Then, I got it I made it even bigger. I cant wait to see a new areial shot.

I think its the same photo. It only works on DOQ,, If I click the other views it says no areal for this zone. Either sight is pretty good for free.

My pond shows up on the Google site. I don't think I had even bought the land in the Microsoft picture.
Wish me luck.

To my way of thinking all of this data is far too old for any serious use, though it is very interesting and it is free. The photography comes from different companies for different areas and with different origin dates. That is why Google may have a newer version of your area than Microsoft does, or the other way around. If you use GPS mapping in a handheld or a GPS based navigation system in your vehicle, keep in mind that the map data you are depending on may be several years old. When you walk into Joe’s Hoe-house or Mary Joe’s Heal Shiner-emporium instead of the new Hilton lobby (that was built five years ago), this will become abundantly clear……

I've found the best view for my place is using Mapquest. The images are newer and clearer than everyone else's.

My map looks like 2005 or 2006. I've never seen this image, or any other detailed aerial of my farm. Thanks!
