I paid for a permit last year to shoot cormorants on my property. I didn't shoot any last year and was considering not renewing it. Did any of you buy a permit and end up shooting any of the birds?

Dave, I expect he would get an award from other local pond owners. They can just about clean out a pond.

James, I don't know of anyone that has ever messed with a permit.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Renew it.
It's better to keep it than try to get another one later.
Just because you didn't shoot any birds last year doesn't mean you won't need to shoot any this year.

James,

Funny thing but I didn't see a single bird last year either. It was a welcome happening, but I intend to get a permit anyhow just in case they come back like before. I'm still wondering what happened to them last year and wishing them the worst!

There were quite a few on Richland Chambers Reservoir. I sent them over to ML's because I heard he was missing his friends.

Ahhh, Bruce, but where did you send them? The secret to water turkey control is to purchase a propane cannon, leave it in the box in a handy place, and set back and smile...no water turkeys.

FOR SALE: never used, never fired Zon Gun propane cannon, most effective water turkey control mechanism available. Send bids to Meadowlark Ranch.

The water turkeys were enjoying a sand bass snack and I reminded them about how tasty tilapia and TGG's are. They excitedly began chattering about a near future return to the ML ranch.

Dave I think if I were to ever shoot one I would put it in my turtle trap for bait. Whenever I clean fish I put the fish remains in the trap and the turtles can't resist it. It's amazing to me how well they can clean up the dead fish. Whenever I come back the only thing left of the fish are the largest of the bones. Everything else is gone!

Q-where and how do i get a permit to shoot comorants?

the people at leach lake MN, where comorants have ruined the walleye fishery, do not like these things.

i saw 2 on a neibors pond yesterday, wanted to have my 22 but too much worry.

Cliffbrook,

To my knowledge, Texas is the only state offering the permit...unless others have followed suite recently.

Jeff,

I purchased it mail-order from California. It's a miracle! Just sitting in the box, first season in many, many years that water turkeys haven't abused my fish...and the cannon never left the box. ;\) If you are interested, I can get you the name of the outfit that sells them.

I had an encounter with my first water turkey this past week. I did not know what it was at first but I thought it looked kind of cool. It didn't look so cool after he dove down and came up with about a 7 or 8 in HBG. I shot in the air a couple of times but all it did was dive down to hide. After I placed a shot on the side of him he flew off. He was back in a half hour and I chased him out of the pond for 3 days. I finally ended his fishing trip.

I just applied for and received my permit a couple of weeks ago. Just in time -- a couple of the little scumbags just showed up at the lake last week. My young daughters refer to them as "the ducks that never leave"...

Finally getting some serious digging done. All I need as 2-3 more days of dry weather to run the earth mover.

I bet it gives you a sinking feeling to see the water turkeys diving among your hybrid stripers. Are your yellow labs still around? I bet they would make the WT's nervous.
