YOU KNOW YOU ARE IN TEXAS IN JULY WHEN. . .
The birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.
The trees are whistling for the dogs.
The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
Hot water now comes out of both taps.
You can make sun tea instantly.
You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.
The temperature drops below 95 and you feel a little chilly.
You discover that in July it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.
You discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.
You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
You break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m.
Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death!!
You realize that asphalt has a liquid state . The potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter, salt and pepper.
Farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs.
The cows are giving evaporated milk.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

The jon boat seat is hotter than the eye on the stove.
If it ever rains it boils before it hits the ground.
People wear boots because if they went outside in tennis shoes the bottoms would melt before they got across the street.

Now, this is true. I went to my shangri la and entered the mobile home. After turning on the AC, I turned on the water and lit the hot water heater. The darn thing didn't come on. Yep, the water was already hot enough and above the setting that ignites the propane.
When we get there, as said, step one is AC. Then I pull back the sheets and bedspread and close the bedroom door. If not, the mattreess will remain too hot to sleep on.
BTW, July is actually acclimating us for August.

I think Cecil started this just so Northern PMs can do our own version next January.

To rephrase Chuck,'and this is no sh__', I was in Valdez, Ak. the summer of 99, and EVERY single day in August was over 100 in H-town. I felt fortunate, even though it snowed 30 ft. in Valdez that winter.

The funny thing is that even though its a joke, several of the items on CB1's list are actually factual. For example, we grow new potatoes every year and if not out of the ground by the first week in June, they will cook in the ground! Sun tea in less than a minute!
Burger, that same summer, I drove by a bank in early September returning from a weekend, and at 6:30 pm the temp flashed on their sign was 105 degrees...the worst is still ahead of us.

Lizards carry sticks in their mouths to get across the road. They get half way across drop the stick stand on it to cool their feet then pick it up and continue on.
In Dog Beers, I've had one.

However I may take all the fish out of th big pond I can this fall, drain it and let it dry out over the winter so it may not matter as far as icefishing. The big pond is 12 years old and it needs a makeover.

Question for TX (& other Southern) PMs: What is the highest pond surface temp you have ever recorded?I'm going to qualify this by requiring that some of the fish lived through it - no puddles on sidewalks . I just got a 91.3 deg F at the surface and it got me thinking.

Wow. Frankly, I've never checked it during a heat wave. Assuming no family involvements or other form of bovine excretions come up this weekend, I'll check.
We may actually be cooler than some of you in the Midwest. It only got to about 101 today.

My nephew moved from Texas to New York and can't believe how people are reacting to 100 degree weather.

Dallas Morning News - August 4, 2006
“In New York, “the Baked Apple” sweltered in 100-degree temperatures this week.
Washington, D.C., “sizzled through a withering heat wave.” And in Chicago, “merciless temperatures created “a summer steam bath.”
Down here in Texas, we call it “AUGUST.”

The difference between Texas and Nebraska in July and August is the nice thunderstorms you guys have to cool you off every now and then. We have a natural high pressure dome that forms every summer here with week after week of no clouds, no rain and no hope of cool. We have had a nice summer so far with temperatures around 100 and a nice hot wind. That is 10 degrees cooler than most years.
Please no more rain for a month! :|

Only if your lucky do you get rain in July or August in Ne, seven years of drought are starting to take it's toll around here. with week after week of no clouds, no rain and no hope of cool It's been like that here too, it's very likely that mandatory water restrictions will start here in Lincoln on Monday. The outlook for dryland crops is getting bleaker every day.

One of my rancher neighbors talks about the past by saying; "You know, back when it used to rain".
Ponds is right. 100 to 102 isn't a real problem here. My electric bill just arrived. $344.xx and mostly for A/C. We turn the unit up during the day when we're not here. Nothing unusual except for the higher prices per kwh.
I told a guy last night that I don't really remember how long it has been since my winter wheat has really worked out. I'm not a farmer. I just plant about 30 acres in 3 different places for the deer and other wildlife.
We really count on rains that come (or used to) the end of August or early September. Makes a mess of dove season. However, we also count on Kansas getting a bunch of storms that push the birds South. I sure hope you guys push a lot of birds South and they just keep on going.

Shorty and Bruce, your situation sounds like at my pond in Miss. I look at the NWS radar and it looks like Ne. is always getting soaked, probably missing your area. They also say Miss. is getting rain. I look at the individual weather cells and they always JUST miss my pond. However, my wife just got there today and called for me to hear hail and heavy rain. Probably killed the few fish probably left in the mud puddle due to temp. shock. I will tell her she can come home when the pond runs up the draw.

BM : I have been watching south Walthall County. Several times it has looked like you got good rains. Most of the state has had rains but parts of the Delta have not. We have had normal rains here.
