my pond is a 1.62 acre pond up until last week the water vis. has been running in the 18-20 inch range. i fertilized it with 10lbs of perfect pond plus(12/48/8} 2 weeks ago. all has looked well up to this point. i went out of town for week end was a slight amount of blue green algae hanging around the banks in a few spots. when i returned 3 days later the whole pond was pea green. you can visbilely see green chunks of planton floating in water everywhere. water visibilty was 12inches on monday morning. 10 inches monday night, tues an wednesday around 8-10 inches during day. had a little rain on thurs visibilty went back up to around 12inches in morning an 8-10inches in afternoon.i placed a 1500 gal a hour pump in pumpin water up to areate the water friday night been running everday all day.Today the water has dropped to 6-8 inches this afternoon all the surface algea is perrty much gone but its real green. what should i do ????? i also have 15 candain geese living on pond right now. an we havent had any rain for a few weeks prior to incident. do you thin i should look into an areator or air pump to help?pond is stocked with 2000 BG?RES an 125 LMB stock in march an may.thanks for help.

Are you saying that visibility has been regularly 18-20 inches before fertilizing?

Just wondering--why did you fertilize? I'm certainly no expert on pond chemistry, but around here 18-20 inches of visibility is considered ideal for producing good numbers of fish. Has your pond been known for having any suspended inorganics such as silt? If not, then it seems like your visibility readings were pretty indicative of reasonably fertile water before you fertilized.

Do your fish seem to be doing ok ? Do you have alkalinity and DO numbers? Don't add any fertilizer for now and if possible run the geese off. You need to be careful. If you are pulling up low o2 cold water from deep in the pond to surface you could cause a DO crash if it kills your bloom. Some surface aeration at night would be good. If your fish are ok then your biggest risk is if your bloom dies and causes a DO crash.
You may be ok if DO is good. What about water temp. profile. The fact that you have low visa. and green water will not kill your fish as long as you have good DO.

Agree with ewest about the aeration efforts. Live algae is producing oxygen during the day and consuming during the night. You may want to only aerate at night and observe the situation closely as far as fish behavior and activity.

Alkinity was around 80 ppm at start of year. dont have any DO numbers. fish seem to be happy during mornig feeding an evening feeding. The pump i got is a sump pump the drains basements, i have it floating in a block of foam so its only pulling off the top 6 inches of water an shooting it into air 12 feet for oxgen will this help? or is it really wastein time to have it?

I would keep using it for a while, if that is not a problem and see if visa. improves. When visa. starts getting better then start cutting back on pump . See this link and Overton's post wrt his hatchery ponds having heavy bloom and need for emergency surface aeration.

Addtionally feeding in the evening when conditions are like this is a big no no. Just feed in morning if at all!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

kemp I think you are probably fine, just had a client with 3 inches of visbility and he made it thru it. You might also try to slowly kill off the bloom. You can do this with light application of liquid copper sulfate (Ktea or Cutrine) misted over the pond.

On fertilizing not sure how you are doing it but DO NOT go by timeframe rather visibility. If you have 18-20 inches do not reapply until gets beyond 24 inches then only apply 2 lbs /acre with your good alkalinity. Good Luck!

ive been using 5-6lbs per acre. had a perrty good infestation of FA{30-40% of pond} early in the season so i was using 8lbs for my 1.62 arce pond every 10-15 days when water cleared above 20 inches trying to keep the banks an shallows darken to slow down the spreading of the FA. Had spurts of FA growing up from bottom in 3-4 ft of water. i was told to mix 1 qt of cutrine plus with 1 qt of reward to 10 gals of water then spray 1/4 of pond with all that then wait a week an do same on next 1/4 until all is gone. i spot sprayed the FA around banks an mainly waited for the weather an grass carps to get it under control. now im seeing a little what looks like bluegreen alge but im afraid to spay until water settles bacd down to normal. i used some straight copper sulfate last year an it turned the whole pond blue an had a major fish kill so kinda cautious now about spraying now. the mixture of cutrine plus/reward did same thing aound the bank when i spot sprayed with it, is this normal?
