Hello, I am getting ready to construct a pond that is about 1 acre in size and will have large mouth bass structure. The pond will have banks that vary in shape and will be more long than wide and will go north to south long ways....
My Question is this.... Which end should I make the "Deep end" and which should be tha "Shallow end".....?????
North or South....?????
Or does it matter....?????
Does the sun in the southern sky during winter/spring time play a part???
And what is best for spawning... north or south?
Thank you all for your time and reply's
Will check back often for any help and answers.

Generally fish spawn in the north end of pond or lake first. If you can, set where the water line will be, then quickly drop to 2' deep, then build another ledge that drops to 4'. That will prevent birds from wading the area, and weeds are a lot less likely to grow...should make for excellent spawning beds, and that type structure will hold fish year round.

When faced with this same question, I decided to make the deep end on the same side as the prevailing wind, which in East Texas is generally south, southeast. That way, wave action direction would be away from the dam thereby reducing the risk of erosion. Seems to have worked out well for my pond.

One of my neighbors recently had one dug. The contractor built the deep end away from the dam. That is unusual but he said that it would keep the weight and pressure off the dam. Make sense?

Makes sense Dave. Would make it harder to drain though.

I'm sure it costs more that way too, you would be pushing the dirt a lot farther. It's probably unusual because if we're going to push the same amount of dirt, most prefer to add to the height of the dam.

I agree. My new pond is bowl shaped with no drop off from the banks and I have discovered that it creates a problem with both weeds and wading birds. I am hoping to expand the size of my pond next year and will do it exactly as Eastland recommends.
