I was hoping Cappy or someone else could tell me what kind of ducks these are:

I found 40-50 of these ducks on my lake every time I went out there this winter/spring. Also has some real little duck that were fast as lightning, but no pics. What could these be? Thanks...

Dan -- they look like scaup (also known as bluebills), and probably lesser scaup, but I'm not sure of that. They are migratory birds, which is why you see them in winter and spring. They nest up in Canada for the most part, although there is some nesting in the northern states. These are diving ducks (rather than puddle ducks like mallards), and so I wonder if your small fast duck was another diver. If so, they may have been buffleheads.

Try this website. www.whatbird.com

It has a realy good search engine that narrows down birds by eleven different catagories. Just keep choosing them until you get down to a few pictures. Than its real easy!!

It's not how many ideas you have, but how many you make happen.
