We recently moved to a house on 13 acres in the mountains of north/western virginia. There are a quite a few ponds around us, but we would like to have our own. Our land is mostly wooded with several run off creeks. We want to put a pond in where 2 of the creeks meet. We had an excavator out this morning to look at the area. He is concerned about the trees around where the pond will be. He said he would remove the trees in the pond site & also take out their stumps. His main concern was the pond will fill with leaves & make it very unhealthy. Is putting the pond in around the trees a bad idea? There are many ponds in the woods behind our property & they seem to be fine. Should be pick a different site, or is there a way to keep the pond clean? The pond will be primarily used for swimming & training our labradors. Jenifer

I don't want the trees in the pond. What I am saying is the pond would be in the woods. We will clear all of the trees where the pond will be, and also around the pond, but with all the other trees in the woods there will be leaves falling in the pond. There is no way around this. Are the leaves that much of a problem? We breed show labs that I also do hunt test with. Jenifer

The leaves that are deposited in the fall contribute a lot to algae the following summer. I skim out what leaves I can in the fall and skim out algae mats in the summer and I am sure I remove more pounds in algae than falls in as leaves. Aeration and the use of bacteria really helps also.

I agree with everybody else. Some people will try to create issues when none really exist. I'd get another opinion anyways. Even if the person said it was nicest place for a lake they'd ever seen I'd get another opinion. This is the time to do you researching. Have fun. I know I have and I planted 600 trees around my pond and yes I will aerate.
