I caught a small catfish out of my pond the other day that I had not stocked and could not identify. I was hoping for some help. Sorry for no pictures. It was about ten inches long with a yellow complexion. The tail was round like a fan not the forked tail of a channel cat or blue. The head was rather flat not round.

sounds like a flathead or a yellow Bull head.....With the "flat head" you described...sounds more like a flathead....

James, if it had a really big head for the size of body, it was probably a mudcat(yellow bullhead). Be very careful as they can turn contortionist to fin you, and it is very painful. Not like a channel, which doesnt hurt too much. Dont throw him back in. If it has a very flat head, it is a small flathead, he will soon be a predataor of anything in your pond.

It sounds like a yellow catfish. I catch a lot of those in the creek. Fun to catch, good to eat.

We used to catch a type of fish in the river when I was a kid, they were called "swiftwaters" They were similar to a yellow bullhead, only smaller with more green to them. has anyone heard of this fish? They were always regarded as kind of a junk fish.
