I am planning a small fishing/swimming pond. I was wondering if there is a problem with putting a 2-3 ft deep by 12 feet area around the perimiter of the pond for safety, and swimming. The majority of the pond will be 6-14 ft deep and the shallow parts will be lined with crushed shale. I am concered about moss taking over the shallow parts. Thanks

Smhog,
No, in fact you should do exactly that. At a minimum, you should have a shelf or gradual taper to the deep water so that children or animals can get back out of the water.
I know of ponds that have killed cattle from drowning because they can't climb back out of the deep water...the same could happen to a child and that would be a terrible tragedy.
p.s. 12 feet seems like overdoing it, 4 to 6 would be very adequate and reduce your weed problems.

Thanks Meadowlark, you've become quite a help. I got a 590 handbook, some good info.
The reason for the deep part is because this is only going to be a 1/4 arce pond supported mainly by a well. I want to make sure to maitain enough water for freezing protection. Also wont a deeper pond with less surface area evaporate less.?

How does shallow water reduce weed growth?

I'm sorry, I was actually saying that reducing your "shelf" from 12 feet to 4 to 6 feet would reduce a potential weed problem associated with the 12 foot shelf...less shallow water.

smhog,
To me, quality counts a lot more than quantity, in life, as well as in ponds...you can have great quality with your 1/4 acre pond. I have one that is a delight...but yes I am excited about the prospects.
