Hello,

I just moved into a new house with a pond in the backyard about 2 months ago. Around 3 weeks ago the water levels starting dropping drastically. It lost about 8-10 feet of water over the course of maybe five days. I wanted to fish and kayak here and now most of the fish that were in this pond are dead and nobody seems to care in my neighborhood.

It is a manmade pond and there are two smaller ponds that are supposed to feed into it. I went and checked and there is consistently water that is streaming into it.

I trekked through the woods and found a lot of stagnant water on the backside of the pond. I was looking for running water as to indicate where the leak is coming from, but I could only find a tiny portion that was moving ever so slowly. This lead me to believe the drain is at the bottom of the pond and is draining underground through the woods to this area.

There is an over flow pipe, I think that is where the drain is? But there is no moving water there either.

Can anyone help me figure out what to do? I know nothing about ponds and I was excited to be able to live here and stock it up with bass but if this doesn't get fixed I am worried the pond will dry up altogether.

If there is an actual "pond drain", then there should be an open and visible outlet pipe in some low place downstream of the pond.

You say there is water currently streaming into the pond. If that is the case, then water should be constantly streaming out of the over flow pipe when the pond is operating normally and is at full pool. Have you found where this water would be exiting the pond from the overflow pipe?

(An exception would be if the overflow pipe at one of the connecting ponds was lower than the overflow pipe at your pond. Water would flow into your pond when the water level was low, but not trickle out of the outlet once your pond was full.)

Good luck finding your problem. It looks like you have a really nice pond - when it is full!

I bet that overflow does a 90 degree at some point into the dam and back a ways and has rusted out somewhere. That happened to one of our old ponds. If water is constantly coming in and it isnt raising, it is going out somewhere.Let us know what you find.
