He kept saying something that we were doing illegal "pings"...anyone know what's up with that?

Glad he (it or they or whatever) is gone.

Who was it and what did he do? If you want to send me a personal message you can.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

He (she/it/they) tried to take over the board last night. They posted a disgusting picture, which was still attached to a couple of posts this am. The Board police got most of them...I don't recommend it, but it was still attached to the thread on posting signs by KC...as of this morning.

Not exactly pond related.

Most of you don't remember when we lost the original discusson forum in April 2003. It was running for about a year and a half when someone did something very similiar and the forum was shut down completely and a new one that we are on now was started. Thousands of posts were lost forever. Sure hope they don't have to close this one.

If you see problems, either let me or Bob Lusk know and we'll take care of it.

Well, I'm glad it's over also.

I couldn't help but write the following quote on the one thread with the porn photo of the three elderly gay men posted by "Big Al." That whole thread has since been deleted.

Sunil's quote:
""I for one feel that all forum members should post pictures of themselves here on the forum.

So Big Al, which one of these randy older gentlemen are you?

Probably the one doing the sucking if I had to guess""

I guess it got deleted some time early this morning.

I think this whole thing somehow started on that thread about TOO MANY TURTLES, not the one that's up now, but one that was around last week. There were a few comments that "could have" offended a black person. Somehow it got into gay vs. not gay.

Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:"
"She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

This shows how much we all treasure this forum. Last night, I thought that we might really have lost it. I don't care what perpective the attacker used, it really made me mad that someone would try and steal this forum from us.

You are so right Norm. Having "lost" one fourm to a jerk I was really saddened to think maybe we would loose this one.
I did see that Yahoo closed down ALL their chat rooms last Friday due to the same problems that we had here. Perhaps that is why this forum was attacked because the ones causing the problems are looking for new places to disrupt.

There was some discussion a short time back about maybe having to change the forum to a fee based service. Perhaps some type of a secure Passport system would prevent losing everything we have contributed so far.

Just to clarify…

We are not at risk of losing anything. Just let Bob or I know when you see a
strange or inappropriate post and we'll delete it and ban the user.

Be careful looking at this site during work...I've run across the photo twice now by accident. Yuck.

This experience further supports Bruce's concern that the material on the board be archived in the event that it was inadvertantly lost. There are some very valuable posts that it would be a real shame to loose.

Those are called "trolls." Their attacks that attempt to disrupt boards are called bombs. They will also assume others' identities (by creating a new account and changing the name slightly). Most message board engines today are much more robust and resistant to damage from these hackers than they used to be; however, these creeps can still obviously be disruptive and cause the administrators trouble and keep them busy deleting posts and banning members.

Their attacks have caused problems on many boards - they caused Rolling Stone magazine to stop hosting a message board altogether. I hope it's just an aberration here. My advice - nip it, nip it in the bud. Ban them fast, every way you can (by email, name, and IP number).

I know it may be labour intensive, but I keep a binder with categories and print off the threads that I have identified as important. The info shared here is in some cases irreplaceable and cannot be found any where else. I have divided the binder in half and made an alphabetized sub-section titled "Bill Cody". \:\)

J.P. Greeson,
I sent an e-maill to jpg@outdoorsites.net
& it bounced back.
So I forwarded it to Bob Lusk at pondboss@texoma.net

JP and Bob,

Was it a regular who was upset (perhaps we could address this issue if so) or a random jackass?

I recall seeing a fingerling under someone's name.

That's not quite what you call a flamer because he did more than that, but those posts were no better than flame posts I agree with that point. Troll sounds about right though. Or an ogre, or [w/e] doesn't particularly matter.

Being a member of a online christian gaming clan. And the game being a shoot 'em up it gets quite a few people wanting nothing more than to cause trouble or wanting to argue to the death over the clan even existing. Needless to say the list is rather lengthy of people banned from the forums/game servers and no doubt a pretty lengthy list of banned IP addresses. Some are probably just for swearing and being disrespectful but not all of them. Infact a time ago a hacker deleted everything and from what I heard left some dirty trash behind. It's pretty crazy what people are willing to do to get your attention and generally cause trouble.

No response, deleting their account posts etc, and banning the IP are what I'd recommend. But I'm not a forum admin and I wouldn't want to be one.

Being that this is a privately owned forum free speech generally does not apply. And IP's are public unless they're hidden by firewall or something so banning them is by no means illegal. And pinging isn't illegal. But hackers use pinging programs to find unsecure computers so they can gain control over them. In an online forum the admins pretty much have full reign to allow or block that only ends with the forums and its software.

J.P. Greeson, Bob, whoever,
kudos! Thank you for deleting. Its people like you that keep entire communities from joining the intraweb.
