has anyone ever seen golf ball size tumors in side of healthy looking large mouth bass. Are they safe to eat or is this the start of a bigger problem.thanks jimmy

Is it multiple fish? Anyone else in the area having the same problem?

Mercury, lead, other heavy metals, radiation, and many chemicals can cause tumors in fish. I suggest you report this to the state wildlife and ensure they report it to the appropriate Enviromental Protection Agency.

Worse case senario is you have a super fund clean up site and you will have to leave the property.

I feel it is extemely important to find the cause and get it fixed before you or yours get some type of heavy metal or chemical poisioning.

I would want the state or feds to obtain different leve samples, bottom sludge samples, up stream samples, downstream samples and water table samples to determine the safety of the water.

On the non-reactive side of things, tumors can occur in fish due to natural dna defects and you may have a family of bad fish that needs to be killed off. May be inbreds, sorta like my hillbilly in-laws.

In either case, I think you should contact the state. If they are not intersted contact a state university, the feds, etc. I am sure it will be a difficult road to find the cause. Good luck.

I forgot to mention that the tumor could be a parasite or a cyst due to a foreign object. Those are my guesses. I am a chemistry type and know how careless some corporations are so I am in fear of someone stumbling on another Love Canal incident. I am surprised some of the senior guys haven't commented. I suggest you personally email Bob Lusk or Bill Cody with as much detail as you can.
