Could they survive outside in a pond setup in the Northern USA or Southern Canada or are they too cold intolerant? Seem like a neat little fish.Does anyone have any experience with them.

This article suggests some success in surviving under ice as long as there is a shallow/warm water refuge and hole in the ice. I would guess without shallow aeration they would not tolerate the northern cold. It also appears they cannot reproduce without specific mussels in place to receive the eggs of the female. I know nothing about these except a few articles online. They also would likely be viewed as 'exotic' as being native to asia and japan, or probably even 'invasive' Canadian laws regarding import of exotics and invasives are quite rigorous. bitterlings pictures of native Chinese Bitterlings in an indoor aquarium
