Hello forum members, I am new to the Pond Boss Forum and the owner of a pond that was installed about 30 years ago. It is about one acre in size and the depth varies from 7' in the shallow end to 15' at its deepest point. Initially, we stocked FHM, crayfish and decided to try Rainbow trout, figuring that if they did not work out, we could always put in something else later. Initially, the trout did great and with supplemental feeding, we were regularly catching four to five pound fish within a couple of years. We were not aware of any fish kills due to natural causes.
Within the past 10 years or so we have begun having summer fish kills. that I believe are due to the warm water and low DO levels. I have tried to improve the situation by installing air diffusers in the shallow end of the pond and more recently removing the diffusers and installing an aerating fountain in the deep end that only turns on at night when the air temperature is cool. I believe that the fountain has helped somewhat and have recorded water temperatures of 60 degrees F in the deep end during the middle of July, unfortunately I did not take any readings before installing the fountain..
Since joining the Forums, I have enjoyed reading about all of the other members ponds and all of the issues. I am looking forward to learning much from other forum members who have had similar problems or just have much greater pond knowledge than I.

Welcome Ken.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
