Saw a little action at the pond yesterday so I walked out on the dock and there were thousands of my minnows swimming around Bob Lusk might have the answer why but I figure the rain we had in the last day had warmed the surface temp up a little. All of a sudden a bass would tear through them. So I decided to get a couple of cups of leftover catfish food to toss out. It was amazing to see how good the minnow population was ranging from 1 to about 5-6 inches feeding on the food. All of a sudden here came a bass of about 1.5 pounds up to the surface ignoring the minnows and eating pellets this was followed by a couple more. I have never seen the bass in my pond feed on the catfish food. Even had a catfish come up for some. Spring is not far away!

Bob once again we have had a fairly mild winter in the Southeast. I have fed through out the winter and feeding has been slow but constant.

Bob,

Lots of reasons why I love spring also but the best reason of all...the water turkeys migrate back north. Come on spring!!!

Fish are funny...and fun. Its seems just a few degree temperature difference can mean the difference between active fish, and hunkered down. Most minnows tend to live fairly shallow, and I suspect they sense warmer upper layers during a sunny day. The top six inches can range as much as 8-10 degrees between morning and afternoon, with a 25-30 degree swing of air temps. 35 as a low, followed by a high mid-60's can change top water temps quite a bit.
Feed eaters? Go figure...when water temps hit the upper 50's, warmwater fish activity begins to rise.
Spring on!
