You found the greatest pond management resource in the world here.. Read read read, all your answers are probably here, if not they can be relatively quickly.. Not often I can copy and paste the same post 5 mins apart
I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease.. BG. CSBG. LMB. HSB. RES.

thanks for the replys , the pond is about 1/4 acre , 21 yrs old , tapers from about 1ft to about 12 ft in depth, i'd call it idaho shaped , stocked with lmb. bg.and ccf. the biggest problem esspecially the last few summers is drought . we,re down almost 4 ft now , and last summer was worse, my plan for next summer is to install a lift pump with a 2 in outlet into an existing fresh water well on my property with float switch I'm guestimatin i can get 100gals a day easy.population control , ph , water color ,and quallity are big questions for me , also like to learn more about feeding .lmb population seems ok but size is poor rarly see fish over 12in , bg are plentiful and size vary from fry to hand size ccf are few but large 3 to 10 lbs id guess . never see small ccf april 09 a added 200 ccf fry I guess maybe 12 made to adulthood and are now 3 lb range ill try topost some pics

Welcome to the forum. If you're adding 100 (or even 1,000) gallons a day, it probably won't do much for the pond. In one study that I read, evaporation rates (yearly) varied between 51 and 68 inches per year. A half acre pond, at full pool, loosing 1" of water looses 13,577 gallons of water. Regarding the fish, it all depends on what your goals are for the pond. If you want a more balanced fishery with feed trained fish, then: If the LMB in the pond aren't feed trained, I'd suggest catching and removing every LMB, no matter what size, for a year. Make a concentrated effort on fishing for LMB at every opportunity. Then contact Greg Grimes at http://lakework.com/site/ for feed trained LMB. The large CC are eating a lot of fish, both small CC and BG. Remove as many of the large CC as you can and restock the same number of 9"-12" CC if you want CC in you pond. If you want to concentrate on large BG, then leave the LMB alone, and start removing female BG. Feed them, they'll learn. The LMB will concentrate on the baby BG, leaving more food available for the larger BG. Water color or rather clarity should be around 18", but anywhere between 12" to 36" will do, providing that the clarity is governed by phytoplankton rather than clay turbidity. There was a great article in the PB magazine a couple months ago on water quality. Call the office and order the back issues.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
