I kicked the timer off my deep diffuser this morning, it's overcast and raining so I am going to let it run all day. So far 2.2" of rain in the gauge and it is still raining with more in the forecast later today, the high is only supposed to reach 73F today. This is the type of summer weather that can kill an algae bloom and cause a DO sag.

The "free" expansion project continues. I'm guessing .3+acres but they aren't done yet and have not committed to a completion date. I have no experience but would've done it differently. They are using a long reach excavator. Hopefully they bring in their D6 dozer to pack everything. It's not level and all very soft. The seeping water appears to be allowing faster evaporation as most other ponds in the area are still almost completely full. Going to be interesting to see how and when the dividing "dam" is removed.
Feel free to voice your concerns or encouragement!

Caught a couple of fat LMB 5#s. Caught a helmet headed CNBG all the way across the 6acre pond that regurgitated bunch of pellets...... guess they do get around

Put 100 lbs of Aqua Max in feeders. Fish seem to like it just about as well as Optimal, judging by their eagerness. Good to see that they remain enthused in August!

Grandkids are visiting, so they've been helping me reduce the BH population for the last couple days. Throwing them all in my holding pen for the time being.

Only one trap set in main tank yesterday and no BH. Today 11 in it. Pretty sure I saw a small swarm 3 days ago out in the middle. Went ahead and rebaited all 4 traps today in the main pond. Wetland/forage pond is likely going dry in a couple of weeks and very few BH were caught lately. 900+ BH removed from both.
100ft from main pond my Lab ran right past a 4ft rattlesnake yesterday...removed it. 2 weeks ago the dozer guys killed a large copperhead next to the expansion. Snakes have found the new BOW. They are also thirsty. It's very hot and dry here.

I very rarely see a snake since hogs moved in. I kinda miss them. Cotton mouth in my pond that I only see when I don't have a shotgun. I like the snakes better than the hogs.

I've changed poison ivy spray. I now use an inexpensive brand from Tractor Supply that is almost 50% glyphosate. Due to a wet Spring it had erupted everywhere. Had to use a 4 wheeler instead of hand sprayer. Some areas I can't get to.

My wife says she got a "weak" batch of RoundUp last time and now buys another (cheaper) brand of glyphosate. She has been spraying our fences for over 25 years, so she should know what she is seeing. New stuff is working as expected.

I had a rain gauge that was stuck down in the ground. Went there last weekend to see how much I got out of a storm. It was shattered into small pieces. No tracks due to rain but have no cows. Had to be a big hog that stepped on it.

We changed out our spinner type deer feeders and went to gravity feeders. It was pretty simple to do by removing the spinner box and adding a 3 way or 4 way spout that is gravity feed. This keeps the corn off the ground and has made a big difference when it came to the pigs coming to the feed. Another thing that helped was to invite friends over for a pig hunt several days in a row. Hunting pressure did a lot to get the pigs off the place.

I'm setting my timed feeder up tomorrow. Was thinking about using gravity feeders, but with the concern over Chronic Wasting Disease (which we dont have a problem with yet, but is in every state around us), I'm apprehensive about having multiple deer feeding from the same spout, which is one way the disease is spread. I'll be busting as many hogs as I can in the meantime.

Saw the intact skeleton of an 18 inch snake on the road leading to the dock. Looks like something killed it then left it for the ants.

CNBG still pretty enthused about feed, but HSB and LMB were slower than they've been.

After a couple weeks of warmer days and nights, and lack of rain the pond has evaporated down about a foot. I continue to hand rake out the little bit of FA on the edges. Still zero vegetation elsewhere (soilfloc may be part to blame and I'd be curious to see if others who do soilfloc on the edges of their pond if the compacted sand also discourages natural rooting of native plants?) I'm not upset as the soilfloc continues to be a great solution to my groundwater pond dropping.

Other reasons for low plant life is (are) crayfish and/or goldfish.

It seems each year, right about this time of August we see the chocolate swirl effect of some type of brown plankton or algae. Timing is good if that means the water is fertile since we have lots of baby SFS and GSH to feed and we need fertile water. I do not fertilize purposely, but am sure that the broadcast spreader that hits the grass around the pond puts some nitrogen into the pond as well. There may be a little runoff too but have not had heavy rains.

Still aerating every night to keep water temps down and the last few days started filling some cold water from my well to top it off.

This is the first year I tried some pond dye. I didn't mind the color but now I'm back to brown color water. It didn't seem to change the bloom potential or timing. At this point with the bloom going I didn't know if I should add some more pond dye in or just let the cycle of life go.

I have been working on my aeration system to get all the diffusers back up and bubbling. PVC air lines and tractor pulled brush hogs don't go well together. So, I got to thinking about why I have not seen the numbers of snakes that I usually see over the summer months. This year I have seen one snake and it was a water snake about 4' long and was laying on the top of one of the brush piles along the shoreline. In the past I might see as many as 14 snakes in a week, all of them in the pond. This year I have seen one snake. You think it is because the lmb and hsb have grown to be larger and more of them? Or because of the past years of removing the snakes by a 410 or the 22 mag? In ether case I am happy not seeing all the snakes this year.

Same with me Pat. I saw a cottonmouth in the pond a couple of weeks ago but didn't have anything to get it with. I used to be infested with snakes of all kinds. Then the pigs moved in and any kind of snake is a rarity.

Pat the first thing I thought of was a while back when DD1 Dave said. Hogs killed/reduced the snakes at this place. But I have only seen one hog in the past 2 or 3 years and I saw him a couple weeks ago on my neighbors place. I have had them in the past 5 yrs. It's easy to recognize if they are there. Going back to the no snakes seen at the pond statement, I don't know if it is due to years of hunting pressure on them or are they being eaten by the lmb?

Yesterday I finished up the work on the aeration lines and got the diffusers up and running again. Water is hot at 89 degrees. Aeration is running from midnight to 9am. The cnbg are very active on feed, the feed trained lmb are feeding along with the hsb when hand feed. They seem to be fewer in numbers when hand feeding but the ones that are there continue to be pretty aggressive. As I boated from one diffuser to the next, looking at the amount of air at each diffuser, I noticed several schools of TFS of different sized fish. Some were a half inch long while other schools were in the inch and a half range. Schools looked to be in the 500 +- numbers of fish in each school. I noticed some of the larger sized cnbg were feeding on some of the smaller sized TFS.
