How deep should I set my diffuser? My pond is only about 1/8 acre and I had the diffuser on the bottom in the deepest part but just recently lifted it about 12-18 inches off the bottom in hopes of giving my YP a cool water escape. The deepest part is about 8 ft. Is this adequate? I was also thinking about adding a second diffuser to mix oxygen on the shallow end of the pond since the one side is a lot deeper than the other. Any help would be great. My surface temps a few days ago were only about 75 degrees but were reading around 87 in the middle of the afternoon yesterday.

I have my 3 diffusers about 2 feet off the bottom (1/4 acre pond) and have no thermocline and think that I am stirring up silts as well. I will be adding 18 inch risers to get the diffusers closer to 40 inches off the bottom. We'll see what that does.

My bottom diffuser is 22" off the bottom, with no plate, mounted onto a stack of milk crates in 11 feet, so they're just over of 9 feet deep. I have no thermocline and about 5 degrees temp variance top to bottom, running strictly at night for some time now.

With a small pond, like ours, your diffuser will likely completely turn your pond over several times a day. Mine is about once every three hours. Multiple turnovers are never a bad thing, except when it comes to temperature.

I recently read that some pond managers recommend using surface aeration for ponds 8 feet deep or less if a thermocline is wanted, because the volume of water being moved is too great to prevent a complete turnover. I'm experimenting with a DIY system now to see if it holds true. Been running only the fountain for 12 hours, 4a-4p, for almost a week. I need to take some readings top to bottom and post the results.

Edit: Checked temps at 5p, an hour after the fountain shut off. Surface temp = 84f, 16" down showed no change. Surprised to find the temp at the diffuser is 80f. I expected it to be less, especially with Dye in the pond. Visibility is 28" without my sunglasses on, using my redneck white coffee cup on a string.

We got a little bit of rain today, but I checked the water temps this evening and it was 78 at the surface and 75 at the bottom. I'm surprised it's that low given we've had highs in the low 90s. I may pull the diffuser up even high, it seems the spring is keeping things cool. I'm just afraid of what will happen when it isn't flowing.
