Today I hand pulled about 100 cockleburs from around the tank. Some already had burrs but shouldn't be developed enough to grow. Last year I weedeated hundreds. Maybe next year I'll only have a dozen or so. Wishful thinking.
Johnson grass on the other hand has a firm grip in large areas.

Assume you are aware of the dormancy of the second cocklebur seed in each pod?

I've been away from the pond for 12 days because of some vacation time at White River Ark for a little trout fishing and some smallmouth fishing at Bull Shoals. So, when I got back to the pond I hand feed some Aquamax lmb and watched the hsb and some lmb thrash the water as they feed. I also watched the cnbg feed when the TH feeder set off a 2 second throw. I saw different sized cnbg from 4" to 10" swimming around along with one lmb in the 3lb range in the mix. I did not see any TFS in the feeder area where I will see them on occasion and I did not see any ripples areas across the pond surface that is caused by the TFS. I am wondering if the TFS have been decimated by the hsb and the northern lmb? It's time to run the sein, which may be hard to do because of the American pondweed that now grows in the shallow areas of the pond. I may have to resort to a cast net. It is survey time smile

Just curious, what do you treat Johnson grass with? I've had great results with Pastora.

Maverick works good if it's short.

RAH, I am aware of the long dormancy but have never heard of a second seed. I also have not researched their lifecycle, yet.

Pat- They are a broadleaf plant that can grow 4ft tall and produce dozens of grape size burrs. Some people will shred their field and a low growing plant will thrive. Some are just naturally smaller yet produce significant burrs. I've seen hogs covered in them dropping them under deer feeders and anywhere else they roam.

I didnt actually do anything "at" the pond today, but I did do something "for" it. I ordered 5 hybrid lily plants which should be here by the weekend.

Tried to pick some stuff that not only look nice but wont grow too deep. Sure hope they help reduce my nutrient load some.

The second seed in each pond lays dormant from 1 to several years. First seed germinates the next year.

Caught another bullhead in the cedar just put out for crappie hideouts. Also caught two red ear in same spot..... kinda odd to catch red ear in 8’ water under a cork set at 24”

After being away from the pond for about two weeks, I did some cast netting around the pond and decided to rest for a bit. I was setting in the side by side and looking over the pond for any signs of TFS when I see a 4' gator eyeballing me. He was in a corner of the pond and was slowly making his way toward me. As he got closer he dropped lower in the water to where only his eyes were above the waters surface. This is my second gator that has showed up, a smaller one last year. This one I am guessing is about a foot longer than the last one. If they continues along this line, it won't be but a few years to where a really large one shows up. Like some of the other undesirable birds and animals that show, this one won't be around long.

I've had to persuade a few to leave my pond too. Haven't seen any this year...yet. Luckily I'm completely fenced in so only a little gator can easily get in.

Added another 500# of AgLime to the pond yesterday afternoon. Now its wait and see how it affects my Alk and Hardness. PH has been spiking into the 9s lately and I'm fighting a BGA issue. Thought it was Plankton but apparently it doesn't float and scum up the surface. Aeration and dye just isnt keeping it under control.

Apparently all this rain has dumped astronomical amounts of nutrients in to pond thru runoff. Even the FA seems to want to come back, so once everything settles, I guess I'll be doing some more aggressive copper sulfate treatments.

Anyone have any other suggestions on how to get this mess under control?

Some times I feel like I do this to my pond:

_________________________
2 acres - FHM, GSH, PSC, RES, HBG, BG, LMB and YP
1 acre - filling with FMH, GSH, and PSC till fall 2020, then SMB and YP
I subscribe to PBM

Spent the afternoon at the pond in amazement at how fast sago pond weed shows up. Had a pretty significant FA bloom last week, was a bit concerned but zooplankton must have come on strong because water looked beautiful today, in fact, I could see a moss-rock structure I built when building the pond last year-looked like I was looking through clear glass at it.. then I noticed the fish. For the first time in a year conditions are such that I could see a group of 10, maybe 12 or more SMB that have been absent from the creel so far-just sunning. Don't know what it was but seeing that completed another phase of what felt today like accomplishment. Maybe the first time since building the pond that I've felt like "things are working as planned". Good day at the pond.. I have to wonder if this is what everybody feels after all the hard work involved in this venture :-)
