I'm planning a road trip from Colorado to PA in early April, and I could take either I-70 or I-80. It would be fun to take advantage of the trip to meet some people from this community, so if anyone in the general vicinity of either I-70 or I-80 would like to meet up, grab some food, a drink, or show off their pond, feel free to send me a PM and we'll see if we can work out the logistics.

Drew, these are always great!

What town in Southcentral PA?

My main pond is in Somerset, PA.

Hey Drew, If you take the 70 route, I'm 15 miles into Kansas out of Co.. Literally "on" I-70. Not much here but "if" you come this way give a shout, always interested in talking with folks with the same love for this!

If you end up on the I70 route I'm about 25 minutes north of St Louis....

Sunil - I've responded via PM, since I'm quickly becoming a 'my-privacy-is-dying-due-to-tech-and-the-internet' tinfoil hat wearing hippie.

I'm about 1.5hr away from Somerset, so in East Jesus Pennsyltucky terms, that counts as next-door neighbors. We used to play baseball and basketball against some teams from Somerset County (Shanksville, Berlin, Meyersdale), a place known to us as the only spot in the lower 48 with year-round snow. During basketball season, even in years with no snow elsewhere, there was always a 3-ft wall of snow along the road that started seemingly immediately upon entering Somerset County. One year during a gorgeous, warm spring, we played in Shanksville in late May, and there was still a bit of snow on the ground. I've also crossed the state/country a handful of times on clear and sunny days elsewhere, but there was an isolated snow storm or monsoon rain only when passing through Somerset County. Maybe I'm just lucky and it's a fluke, or maybe there's some kind of vortex that sucks down storm clouds and hangs onto them over Somerset County. If I can trust my low-light vision, I'd say that the Somerset area would be quite a beautiful patch of Earth in the event the Sun ever decides to shine there. [/end picking on Somerset session]

Feel free to pick on my county; I'm sure all 6 residents would be offended.

Also Sunil, if I can't catch you during this road trip, any day I could make a special trip out to Somerset to trade you however many of my finest green carp for a few of your ugliest, skinniest, cull SMB. My green carp are quite impressive specimens, at about 10" and RWs of 4.5%. It took a lot of hard work to get them that skinny, but they do look pretty good on the runway in a swimsuit.

PM sent Drew,

Sounds like a nice way to make a long haul down I-70 a bit more enjoyable. In fact, make as many PB stops as possible in the Mid West because I-70 is not known for anything scenic from Indiana through Kansas (pretty flat farm ground).

We have several votes for I-70, so that's the planned route at least from CO into Illinois. I'd seen so many people's locations before and imagined that I've probably passed by within 30-40 miles of dozens of PB members' houses.

For the more northern I-80 corridor crowd, also feel free to PM me with interest, because I'll be coming back through this summer and could easily take that route and visit.

I'll try to coordinate timing with you all via PM to see if I can stitch together an itinerary that includes you all.

Noel, I've heard several people joke about the Great Plains states being boring, but I was pleasantly surprised when I passed through Missouri and Kansas. Missouri (at least the parts I've seen) has more rolling hills and nice scenery than I imagined it would, and for me as an East Coast guy, Kansas landscapes looked like another world (knobby hills, ravines, grasslands, being able to see so far, windmills, and of course the friendly hawks that are always sitting on a fence post to greet you right at the border (those hawks that are so loyal to their state, they never seem to cross the border into Missouri or Colorado haha)).

I guess it's all relative to where you're used to. I can see how Kansas would look like a different planet the first time through. I've lived around Missouri all my life and I can tell you that the I-70 corridor is as plain as it gets. If you want an extremely more scenic route...take any crisscross series of state highways through the southern half of the state. So long as you don't get car sick, that is.

Drew, I haven't even been to my main pond in Somerset for over a year. Sad, I know, but true.

Hey Drew -

I enjoyed our visit this morning. Would have liked to spent more time with you, but the last couple days have been nuts and I needed to get back to work so I can make some money to buy fish for the pond.

If you pass through again give me a shout and we'll do it again.

The trip and PB community tour was successful. It was awesome being able to get to know a few people, put some faces to screen names, see what people have been doing with their ponds, and just take a few leisurely breaks during the long trip to be social and really get to see some new parts of the country (you don't really get a feel for places from the interstate).

A big thanks to Kenny, Greg, and Fred!!

Sunil, regrettably no pictures (that I'm aware of)... I never think of taking pictures until after the fact, which is probably why I only have like 3 pictures of myself during a whole 25-year window of my life. If anyone does this sort of thing, I'd recommend getting a couple pics if for no other reason than to nudge the memory.
