Nice scarecrows, much nicer than the "ONE" I built out of two by fours with a shirt and ball cap. Mine did not seen to work much as it was placed on the shoreline. The boat idea most likely worked better but a boat full of rain water is a pain to keep a float and would have to be emptied many times during this time of year. But still, when lead poisoning can not be used, hay, it's better than the darn birds I think! And I think your scarecrows are an art and you have a good place to show off your work!

Had 3 water turkey scouts stop by the pond today. I don't mind most predatory birds. We have at various times little blue herons, an occasional great blue and green herons. All are interesting additions to the pond despite their thieving ways.

But

I hear bad things about these water turkeys. Particularly that the first scouts can bring a mess of friends and clean out a pond.

The dog spooked them for a bit, but they returned. They are not shy. I ended up scaring them away with very loud noises. If they come back I'll consider obtaining a Texas Cormorant Control Permit.

4 acre pond 32 ft deep within East Texas (Livingston) timber ranch. Filled (to the top of an almost finished dam) by Hurricane Harvey 9/17. Stocked with FHM, CNBG, RES 10/17. Added 35lbs RSC 3/18. 400 N LMB fingerlings 6/18

Unfortunately, those permits aren't available anymore. That's scheduled to change with a new federal permit though.

Al is right.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

In my area cormorants are a serious problem. As said, some scout and when they find a pond full of fish they call their friends. A few years ago 5 cormorans settled in mine and, in about 3 months, they eat about half of my fish, not counting all those who died because of the pecks but who were too big to be swallowed (most LMB among the 14 " and the 18 "...).
In the following years I tried all the legal methods known to keep them away (holographic tapes, flashing discs, fake birds of prey, gas cannons ...), but nothing worked. Then I got lucky with the scare eye balloons. I bought 6 of 3 different colors, hanging them on poles and moving them weekly alternating colors so that cormorans do not get used, they have worked for me. But they have two problems: they are not very resistant and if, for any reason, you cannot move them for a while, cormorants get used quickly and you find them in the pond anyway.
So studying and thinking I found a more functional, cheap and safe system. The only flaw is that it only works with small ponds like mine (1 or 2 acres).
As the cormorant is a big bird and its plumage is not impermeable to allow it to dive "ballasted", to take off from the pond it requires many meters of free water.
So in October 2017 I bought 1,000 meters of 80 lb fishing line, I planted 12 rebars in the pond about 7 'from the shore, leaving them 3' out of the water. Then I pulled the line between a rebar and the other, creating a sort of net suspended about 1 meter from the water.
Cormorants are afraid of colliding with those lines in landing and not being able to leave safely and quickly in case of danger, so they avoid the pond.
I install it in November and take it off in March (when cormorants are looking for ponds here), but the spaces between one line and the other still allow me to fish easily from the shore and from the pier.
Last winter I saw hundreds of cormorants flying over my lake but anyone in the lake. This year is going the same way, so I'm happy and my fish even more.

I had a scout at the pond day before yesterday. I try to discourage the scouts. I think it helps to keep numbers of them away. My Golden Retriever who is now a year old is told "See That Bird? He Is Eating my fish" and he will start Growling and barking and busting the water after the cormorants, GBH or any other bird when I tell him "bird eating my fish" smile He has grown to be quite birdy and is going to make a good duck hunting dog.

Flame, I hope we can get it this year.

IIRC, this was posted by TPWD in August of 2017.

Tracy, Brian came over last week to show me his new drone. I think his has a range of around 4 miles. I can see plenty of fun to be had by chasing off winged critters from the comfort of my fort porch.

AL, I LAUGH at seeing that picture smile I hope it has floats like a float plane or floating helicopter. I know Brian has flying skills smile For me I have trouble gaming on the TV using hand controls so I could see me flying it into the water smile OOPS! I think I have some of those same fish that Pat has. Water test show good numbers of hardness but no lead so it has to be the fish they are eating.

So a quick story from WW2.

It was so hard to get food near the end of the war and keeping it so someone ells didn't get it. Grandpa learned that with a hook and a line and small float they could catch fish eating ducks. wink wink, The line would be about 2 feet long with the hook then another 2 feet of line with a float. This was all tied to a very large rock on the bottom. This would be placed in water that was 4.5 feet deep or deeper.

When the duck would dive down and grab the bait on the hook it would swallow the bait and hook with a bunch of line. The rock was so heavy that the duck could not make it back up to the surface for air. The duck would also be deep enough that no one knew where it was under the water but grandpa who placed it.

I would not be here with out grandpa's poaching.

Mom told me that she learned to poach eggs when she was little. Always assumed she was referring to cooking, but ...

Just took a look at the federal form 3-200-13 for Migratory Bird Depredation.

It would be easier to license a nuclear reactor.

The judge was obviously not a fisherman, nor a pond owner. Nor is he or she elected. Shows the importance of the judiciary.
