I have a few stobs sticking above the water that they love to perch on, so I've found wrapping scare tape around it and letting some hang loose is effective. You don't want just to wrap it around the stob, nor have so much tape that it lays flat on the water. You want it to flap in the breeze unrestricted, making noise & flashing in the sunlight.

Tree trunks close to favorite bird spots also work. If birds are really bad, you might hammer in a post where the water turkeys congregate and fly the tape there, too.

The tape doesn't last forever, but we found most of it was ok four to six months. Seemed to work better than the scare eye balloons, at least at our place.

We had another warm and breezy day, and I fed again right before sundown. To my surprise, the CC were swimming around feeding on top like they do in summer. It's only February 4th!

Fed again today. Even better CC reaction. I thought they wouldn't feed on top unless water was above about 68 degrees. Last year they didn't start until early May.

Got HVAC all connected & working at pond house! Now we can bring in furniture & stay there. Still have siding to put up and grass sod, but this is a big step forward.

Fished about 2 1/2 hours with buddy. We caught ten, culled eight, buddy lost one in the 4 to 5 lb range. Again, anything longer than 15 inches is fat & very healthy.

Despite newly deployed bird tape, cormorants were on lake. Sigh. Don't know if this group is tougher than last year, or maybe more desperate. Also a kingfisher, two Canada Geese (who hung around the one feeder with food!), two GBH and the mated pair of bald eagles. More turtles than last summer.

Long 80 lb fishing line strung from trees to stobs don't seem to have done a lot to discourage cormorants. Oh well, you never know until you try.

Build it and they will come?

I can see it from the birds point of view. Go fishing in some other BOW where food is scarce, or COME TO THE BUFFET!

Easy choice. Sigh. It will start at our place soon enough.

Fish are feeding well (MVP). Bass are visible, often hovering near the surface. The LMB are almost a year old and are big enough to see from inside the house which is cool.

Two turtles (red ear sliders) are around. First time I've seen them on a log sunning. They look happy too.

Stopped by the feed store and ordered one bag of Aquamax LMB. It comes in friday. I suspect the LMB are big enough to eat it now.

Surface temp was 70 this morning. We have a cold front coming through but it won't be long before spring sproings.

Tossed in some food, no takers. Walked the shore to see what was out and found a severed CC head floating. Stocked CC in Oct and this was the right size. Do you think it died and was chewed off? Pretty clean looking to be chewed off. Will take pics if I find any more.
Kept walking to the cactus patch and dug up more. Tossed sticks for the dogs.

I'd venture to say the fish died of something stress related and what you found was left over turtle lunch. They cut pretty clean when that mouth clamps down and rips a piece off.

Been fighting a kidney stone the last few days and it sent me home from work early. After laying around several hours it finally eased up enough that felt like walking around a bit, so out to the pond I go. I witnessed several decent BG suspended rather shallow so I decided to get a better look.

Grabbed a slice of bread for dough ball bait and in 20 minutes pulled out 3 like this one.

The little mutt pond is coming right along!!

Thanks Pat. I think I'm through the worst part of it now. Just gotta wait till it decides to get ejected completely. That's always fun!!! Not my first stone rodeo, tho, so at least I know what to expect.

Nice fish, Mike! Sorry about the stone, I've been through that myself and it was not fun.

Thanks bud! The few minutes of fishing definitely made me feel better. All three were very feisty and gave my light action rod a good workout. Cant wait to catch one those bigger ones down there.

At least I didn't have to get this one surgically removed....that blows dog farts.

This one was probably the better of the three... guessing close to 8".

Day before yesterday I saw some lmb crusein the 2' shallows in pairs. Also saw 4 or 5 hanging out around the feeders mixed in with the cnbg. The were also in the one to two foot water. And when hand feeding Aquamax lmb some were feeding aggressively . The FLMB mixed in do not show any interest in the lmb feed and you can see them looking over the bg. These lmb would move a couple of feet stop and look for something in there mouth gape size to eat. And while hand feeding, the Hsb were really aggressive. But, this all took place before we had the front come in with some cooler weather and rain. I pulled out the fly rod using a shad type bait and went looking for some of the lmb hatch from last spring. Caught one in the 7" range looked pretty healthy to me. Does not seem to be large mount of these sized fish. Also caught and removed a one eyed, poor conditioned 15" lmb

That will really help with shore line erosion when your wind whips up. I did it to my 3 acre pond but was not going to on my RES or old refurbished one acre ponds. But after seeing what the wind was doing to the banks and dam, I did both of them. I was a lot more lazy. I used the front end loader on my tractor. Sprinkled a half bucket down the bank and into the water a ways, then put the bucket at 45 degree angle and pulled it back firmly into the bank.

Don't forget to put some below water line. As pond level drops during droughts, bare dirt will be exposed subject to erosion.

Bank erosion and rock lining.

For the people that don't like the looks of rock around the edges, in two or three years the grass and algae
will fill in and you don't even know it's there.

Still frozen, so I just took a picture. No snow on the ice, and water is trickling out the overflow pipe. This is by far the longest it’s ever been frozen over. Hope my fish are ok..

Man, that is amazing. We have not been completely iced over all winter, and only about 245 miles south of you. The temperature gradient is really steep.

SetterGuy, you should be good. Clear ice, lots of sun. Fish should be fine. I am worried about winter kill for the first time in SW MI. I have 4-5" clear ice, we kept it clear of snow in January. then we got snow, heavy rain so we had 5-6" standing water on the ice, then heavy snow and slush. It now is a slushy mess and I can't safely get on it to shovel it. I also have no vegetation to make O2.

Did you try ice fishing for those HSB yet?

We'll have to see, hopefully we get an early spring and snow and slush melts!

Phytoplankton also produces oxygen. Some ponds don't have submerged plants.

The pond was down 4.5 feet most of last summer. So there’s a lot of weeds that were along the bank, that are now under water. We are in the teens again today and tonight, plus 3” of snow on top today. With the exception of GS, I don’t think my fish population is that high.
I didn’t try ice fishing again. My pellet stove was down, so I spent the day tearing it apart. Finally tracked it down to a bad auger motor. On order.. Plus, I wasn’t sure about the ice this time. It seemed solid, but there’s nobody around to help me if it won’t hold 250 lbs..

Pat, Pat, Pat. Haven't you ever heard if you ain't got a picture, it's just another fish story!!??

No, really, congratulations on a great catch. I've been bass fishing all my life in places where BIG bass are abundant and I've never boated a 10 pounder. Sounds like your pond is producing some behemoths.
