It has been 8 months since my pond has been at full pool and it needed a good flushing IMO. We got 5 1/2 inch rain yesterday and this morning it is slowly going over the spillway. At least I am not loosing fish over the spill this time. I had a lot of mud and bloom and visibility was only about 5 inches. It has already cleared to at least 10 inch just this morning. I hope it continues and I hope this is a "little" normal for east Texas this time of year!!

Big congrats Pat!! I know you have been needing it more than me. How much rain did you get? Wife and I just got back Thursday from a rv trip to Tennessee in the Smokey Mountains. Worked out great. We chased rain all the way there but never caught up to it. We left the day before it dropped into the 20's. And drove home in no bad weather at all and was very blessed to be home right before this near 6 inch rain!! God is good!! Wonderful trip to Christmas in the Smokey mountains at Dollywood. Only Disneyworld has them beat on beautiful lights!!

Flame, I'm happy for you and Pat. It's been a really weird year rain wise, but it's finally starting to catch up.

We're in another drought. About 8 inches below normal for the past three months. Last full pool was May 4, 2018.

Congratulations, James! I only got 3 1/2 inches, but was already at full pool. Nice to see after low levels all summer. grin

Flame, Normal for E. Texas? What's that? Seems to me that for the past 4 years every Fall has been different when it comes to rain amounts. Last year I was in a drought from June to Dec. And did not get measurable rain till Dec last year. Others here across E. Texas, I remember they were good to go during that same time period. This year, the pond has stayed full for the most of the fall. I would put our spring rains much the same, scattered amounts from here to there. I will never forget the first time I went to the PBC in Feb(I'm pretty sure it was in Feb that year.) near Ray Hubbard lake. It started raining on my way back and it seemed to rain most everyday till June. Heck one day I got 9". Crazy arse weather.

This rain event I got around 5" at the house in S. Shreveport and not sure how much at the pond (25+- miles west of me). Been to cold and wet to venture out. Home fire place has kept me in smile

I'm still waiting for the pond to reach the spillway for the first time. It went over the dam (from empty and dry) during Harvey, but the top of the dam and spillway weren't there yet. This August was brutal, seemed to lose 6" a week.

There have been some big rain events in the past month that flooded nearby Huntsville and Lufkin but we didn't get much.

Pond gained at least a foot or so in this weekend's rain event.

Most of my watershed is foot deep humus in a forest. Much of this is composted limbs from logger delimbing. Walking through there is like walking on thick sponges. Although it has great elevation changes I only get runoff if my phone is screaming about flash floods. Around the pond and house I have lawn and it is productive.

I still need 2 to 3 feet and I'm optimistic that that'll happen this winter.

Lurking I'm impressed with the variability of experience within Glorious East Texas.

Still no idea at all as what is "normal" around here.

According to my rain gage this morning, our total came to 5.75". The wife had to drive thru flooded roads to get to work yesterday morning. The pond has been full all fall, and it got a major flushing Saturday morning. The water level was about a foot over the yard on the discharge side of the pond. I'm hoping I didn't lose too many fish. I've heard larger fish will tend to go deep and ride the event out. Fingers crossed. My little paddle wheel pontoon was on the bank on the opposite side of the pond from where I'd left it beached. Have lost some visibility, guessing it to be around 12" this morning. I'd say this is only the first of several flushes itll get before the summer dry spell hits us again.

This was almost exactly the kind of event that filled the pond...almost to the day, two years ago. It was less than half full then at 11 feet deep.

I'm seriously considering building a temporary fence system on the overflow side, made from 1/2" poly fence material and grade stakes, to keep my bigger fish contained during these flash flood events.

Mike, it is said that bigger fish try to go upstream in an overflow. I've always thought that some will go out but not a noticeable amount.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Guess I'll have to start watching the neighbor's yard then. That's where most of my runoff comes from! I should have known that!!

Well, I got another 1 1/2 inch rain last night and this morning but I think it has stopped for the year. My new year will start at full pool and running over the spillway!! Final total for this year....a whopping 106 inches of rain in 2018 in deep east Texas Sabine County!!

It looks like its finally stopped here after another 1.5". I have no idea how much we've gotten this year, but we've been full since the summer droubt ended. I'd be willing to say we got close to what you did down here on the lower end of the Sabine, Flame, but not quite. I'm going to keep a rainfall record starting tomorrow, as well as any fish caught (species and length). Being a panfish pond, weight isn't a major concern for me.

The pond is now 2 years old, and not nearly close to being at capacity, but it's time to start harvesting a few females for the grease pot.

I have been keeping a daily rainfall record for at least three years. Rain here has been sporadic...feast or famine, not much in between. But, it has averaged out over all. Averages don't tell much.

We got a reprieve from rain on new years day, but we're right back in it again today.

Called Toledo Bend Joint Operations earlier to today to find out what they were doing up river. As of 2pm, the lake has reached 173, that's a foot over full pool. They've now opened all 11 gates to 3 feet and both generators are going full bore 24/7. Up river, Deweyville is starting to flood and the river is 26 ft and rising as the water in Deweyville hasn't reached us yet.

Sure do wish they'd get their proverbial heads out of you know where and re-think their "Federal Mandate" on how to regulate water control for the lake. Letting it get completely full and overflowing before you start letting it go just doesn't make sense to everyone downstream of the dam.
