Canadas, unlike most other species of geese are known to take up permanent residence all over the country. There's a rather large population living on Rockefeller refuge on the gulf. I've also seen small flocks on several ponds around here.

To answer your question Anthropic, all waterfowl will go to nest in the spring. Exactly when that is depends on the location. I've seen goslings as early as late March down here. It depends on the prevailing weather and length of day for the most part.

Being that your birds just showed up, they're likely to leave once their clocks tell them it's time to migrate back to wherever they came from. But its possible you may have one or two mating pairs decide to stay.

I know a water turkey is protected. Is it against the law to scare them away from a pond with loud noise?

Don't think so, though I've had better luck placing bird scare holographic tape on areas where they like to perch.

I have ~30(and growing) locals that frequent our area.

I do my best to put out the no rooms for rent sign but they land any way.

Oh no...and we are neighbors....they won't enjoy their stay at my place

Although I think CGeese primarily eat plants..the birds that eat fish are on my enemy list

They eat grasses and grains. Although their waste can upset water chemistry balance.
