That is exactly what I did on my pond. See my post today in this same section. So far is working great. I do think it is important to have a rock solid overflow plan in place in case of a biblical deluge.
"Another year has gone by.... pond is still mostly empty. Marginal drainage and dry year are not a good combination to fill a pond.

Hopefully the pond will now fill over the winter and I can get on with the stocking plan."
