Newbe here:Just had a 1/4 acre pond build on my hunting propert in wi and I went up this weekend a there is a bunch of this brown floating guck all over the surface. Pond is dug in clay about 12’ deep now and still slowly filling with ground water. I guess first what is it and second how do you get rid of it. Kids really enjoyed swimming until now. Any help will be appreciated.

Jeb, Welcome to the club, you've come to the right place for help!

I not an expert on pond "stuff", but I can give you my suspicions and you can do some reading on the subject while your waiting on a amore confident response.

I would think that you are dealing with filamentous algae (FA) (some better pictures would help). We all deal with it to some extent. This stuff grows on the bottom when the pond has enough nutrients to feed it and it can get some sunlight. This usually means that it grows in and near the shallows unless the pond is really clear then it can grow in much deeper water. Eventually the FA starts to die off, then it floats to the surface and meanders around the pond looking unsightly. Most of us that have the time will rake it off and dispose of it in a compost pile that is down hill from the pond so that the nutrients from the FA does not wash back into the pond.

If you do a google search for "FA pond boss" and "Filamentous Algae pond boss" you will find some good places to start reading. You can also scan the threads located in the "controlling unwanted plants" section located here...

Thanks Noel for the response as it is greatly appreciated. While doing research on this site I did notice on a few posts stating “FA” and for the life of me was unable to figure out what that was short for! Thanks for the info! Glad to know It’s common.

If your HBG, HSB, YP, and FHM's are eating a lot of DW as the GBH and RST's are after the BFIP. (LSHIFIMP)

EDIT: I have been contacted by a respected fellow PB member and he stated that the above could be taken as an insult...The above ditty is meant to be a joke that was intended to display how I, as a once new member, felt when trying to decipher some of the PB (pondboss) threads. It is, in no way, meant to be a "crack" at JEB. My apologies, Jeb (and others) if I have offended. The following portion of my original post should show my sincerity in trying to help another pond hobbyist. Now back to normally scheduled program...

Double Edit: Well, shoot, I guess that all is well that ends well. I misunderstood the private message that was really supposed to be a request to poke fun at this post. Sometimes I'm dense that way. Request granted if it's not too late!

Save the following thread to your favorites. PB boss uses a lot of acronyms and this Commonly Used Acronyms thread is very useful...
