i have seen this red algae floating before, but i am not sure what it is. it was only a light dusting. after taking the pics i added a few scoops of fertilizer and the pump came on that i referenced in another thread and ran for an hour or so. when i went back to the pond an hour or 2 later the color had changed to green!! how and why can it change so fast?? i am 99.9% there was no green earlier and after the green appeared i am positive the red was gone.. i looked all over the pond for any sign of it.
would you have ever thought it would change so sudden? The pond has had a very dense bloom now for a few weeks. we had about 5 inches of rain scattered over 3 days and pond stayed green. upper end was starting to see a little stain at the end of the rain event. today the entire pond has a stained look. not sure if that is suspended clay or if it is going thru some cycle. i have been expecting to see a quick die off of the phyto, but so far it hasn't happened. even thought the bloom has been dense i continue to fertilize just a small amount here and there.
Red alga if I remember correct is an indication of iron. Any chance your fertilizer has chelated iron in it too? Maybe in the soil and washed in from the rain event?
